Fresh in the tyre tracks of the Toyota Corolla World Rally Car comes a limited edition Corolla for the road. Just 420 examples of the Toyota Corolla G6R were made available in the UK, sold from the end of January 1998. On the road price was £14,795.
Like the Toyota Corolla World Rally Car which so nearly won the 1998 World Rally Championship in the hands of Carlos Sainz, the G6R uses a six-speed gearbox, four cylinder engine and the latest 8th generation three door Corolla bodyshell. Like its rallying cousin, the G6R also has an aluminium bonnet to save weight - the result of further homologation of its rally car relative.
NEW ENGINE & GEARBOX
Essentially, the G6R is based on the Corolla G6 three door model which has proved a popular choice since the latest Corolla range was launched. However the G6R differs from the regular G6 model by using the 1.6-litre 16v 109bhp Corolla engine in place of the G6's 1.3-litre 16v, 85bhp engine. With its extra go and six-speed gearbox, the G6R becomes the nippiest car in the Corolla range with a 0-62mph acceleration time of 10.0 seconds and top speed of 121mph.
EMOTIONAL & RATIONAL
Low group 9E insurance rating, combined with a fuel consumption figure of 34.0mpg and a unique and comprehensive specification level, the G6R will appeal to the head as well as the heart.
The G6R boasts an enviable equipment tally building on that offered by the regular Corolla G6 derivatives, but further value-adding with new unique design 15 inch 6 spoke alloy wheels, colour-keyed sill skirts and front lip spoiler, a 6-disc CD auto-changer conveniently located underneath the passenger seat and a new G6R front grille badge.
The G6R also features as standard four disc brakes with anti-lock, air-conditioning, electric tilt and slide glass sunroof, electric windows and door mirrors and engine speed-sensitive power-assisted steering.
Safety equipment includes driver and passenger airbags, five three point seatbelts with electronic pre-tensioning and force limiting systems on the front seatbelts.
Convenience items include a rake-adjustable steering column, height-adjustable driver's seat cushion, central locking, remote boot and fuel flap releases, outside temperature gauge and front fog lamps.
Priced at £14,795 on the road, the G6R costs just £820 more than the Corolla G6 three door and is available in two dramatic colours: Sunburst Red and Satin Black metallic. Metallic paint is a no cost option.
