I've recently acquired a brace of W124s, as they came from the same home and share a few issues they can share this thread too! The S124: It's a 1991 200TE, in Smoke Silver. This one is currently in storage due to a lack of tax and test. It has a cold starting issue and needs a good valet and service to recommission it. In the last two years it had a full respray from the original Signal Red, a cream leather interior fitted and lots of welding done. During the work: The C124: A '94 E220, this has become the daily driver. It suffers an idle issue (which apparently the S124 suffered before the cold start issue reared its head) where the revs will try and rise to about 3000rpm for a few mins when idling. It looks rough as but underneath is a different story with a full back end rebuild 6 months ago, lots of welding done, properly undersealed and generally taken care of. Plan is to get the bodywork sorted, then sell it on to fund the estate being returned to working order. I'd like a set of 15" 8-hole Mercedes alloys to replace the steels, but it's not a desperate issue. The rot (well, some of it! ): And after: First job on both will be to swap the OVP relays out and check they're not causing the running issues (known to fail apparently and cause all sorts of problems), so acquired a couple this morning from MercMan in St Erth. Coupe done and no issues so far, won't say its fixed for sure until I've done a few hundred miles without any problems. Torn at the moment deciding whether to keep the very cool OE Pioneer radio/tape unit or fit a modern CD player - the tape unit has sections layered with the same wood finish as the dashboard and works very well with a tape to aux plug adaptor for my iPhone, but a modern unit will also deal with the huge amount of CDs I own. Of course I could just rip them all and store them on a dedicated MP3 player.... Cheers for looking, feel free to comment or suggest things...

The before pic reminds me of my '91 W124 300D before the 'qualified welder' set fire to it when welding the anti roll bar mounts! Broke my heart as I loved that car!
The estates are fantastic cars. I had a 200TE with the 7 seats. Great car but not a patch on the 300D for smoothness and economy. A mate has a '95 300D estate that has sat for the last 3 years under a tarp. It needs new wings,a strip and rebuild of the brakes and a bloody good valet but it's had all the self levelling suspension done and starts and runs sweet as a nut. I've been tempted to buy it and go satin black with a wee drop in height but I've got a Dutton Phaeton to do first.
The coupe has timeless style for me. Nice to score two 124's like those. :-)

Both 4V engines... Have a close look at the engine wiring loom. The mantling on these gets brittle and causes all sorts of issues - worst case being a fied ECU or even wors - fire o0

Cheers, will do. Is there anywhere in particular where the insulation tends to go? I know the estate has had a fair bit of the loom replaced.

Ok, will check anyway for chafage. As we all know, chafing is not good! Hopefully the OVP relay is the issue on both cars.

That radio: It currently resides in the coupe, the estate has a modern CD/USB/Bluetooth/everything else/etc unit. The wood in the estate is slightly darker, if it were the same I'd be tempted to swap the head unit into the estate when the coupe is sold.

Those head units are awesome! - I had the none wood version in my first car.

Started on the long list of work today, swapped the winter tyres for the spare set of wheels that came with the S124: There was also a spare set of wheel trims. Really I want a set of the 8-hole 6.5x15 alloys that the coupe would have worn when new, if anyone knows of any (tyres not a problem, the steels have the right size and they're all good) going for a reasonable price then let me know. Anyone need a set of winter tyres??? Now although it doesn't look it, the coupe is rather cosmetically challenged: Deep key scratches on both rear wings, the bootlid and bonnet. There's also a dent on the n/s door, and a small patch of rust on the o/s/r wing below the filler cap. I need to find out the paint code so I can get the car resprayed next month, anyone know where I can find it? It's not on the VIN plate. The engine bay irritates me - far too filthy! Might try and find another cam cover and paint it in body colour - this is another engine bay I tidied: Cheers!

I need to find out the paint code so I can get the car resprayed next month, anyone know where I can find it? It's not on the VIN plate. It's on the plate to the right of the bonnet latch, the one with the stamped holes in it. Post a pic of that plate and I'll tell you the paint codes.

Both looking good mate, quite jealous of the estate! 8 holes seem to go pretty cheap on eBay, was a set for £80 BIN last week

The S124 lives The estate was delivered to me as a non-runner - it would turn over but not fire. The fuel light was on, so today I filled the jerry cans and took some jump leads to where the car is stored. The fuel cap was almost stuck to the filler neck by vacuum pressure, having run the coupe from full to empty with minimal vacuum forming I suspect the tank vent is blocked. I also swapped the OVP relay and re-attached a vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold to the MAP sensor. Stuck the jump leads on and the car fired up with minimal effort, and idled for over half an hour without hesitating or cutting out. However, after about 15 mins the gauges all failed. Interestingly the speedo tripmeter still counted the 0.4 of a mile that I did driving around the private land where it is stored, despite the needle not moving. Looking in the fusebox all the fuses appear tired and the clamps corroded: The blown one in the middle is the heated rear window and was blown when I got the car. Tried a different fuse but no joy - the numberplate lights are on the same circuit and have also failed. There is 2.5v being fed to the fuse, but nothing the other end, so first off will be a new set of fuses. The idle needs adjusting really, and when a gear is selected it doesn't compensate for the extra load. I do wonder if this unit is at fault: The vac pipe heading into it is the one from the inlet manifold that was loose. Anyway, a good day, even if its thrown a few more faults to clear!

Ah, the hub caps are what I fitted to cover the bare steel wheels. I suspect it would have left the factory with 8-holes, the majority of post-facelifts (especially C124s) did. It arrived at the previous owner's place on steels after the guy he bought it from kept the 5-spoke AMG wheels that had been fitted.
Given the spec (leather, Pioneer dash-coloured stereo, 2.2 engine), I'd be surprised if it really did leave the factory on steels - seen a few pre-facelift Coupes on steels, but not a post-facelift.

That unit on the inner wing is for the ignition control, they are a common fault, but usually result in the engine losing two cylinders, not idling problems. The throttle body is probably all gummed up? Try cleaning it out with carb cleaner & an old toothbrush. One problem that they do suffer from is the wiring up to the throttle body, it has a multi-core cable & all the insulation falls off!
