Peugeot 309 - 205 without the (tiny) extra money to pay cos it's a 205
Citroen ZX - gotta be worth every penny of the £50 you'll have to pay to get one
Citroen Xara is you have a few more quid. Bit more modern but a total non car and hence non money
Rover 600 - eh forgot about them didn't you? So did everyone else So boring people forget to bid on them on ebay! Don't make their mistake. Comfy, toys, nice engine
Mk 3 golf - even the vw boys hate em so they cost about -£50 at the moment.

i've two to recommend, both that i've owned. skoda favorit (any guise really) peugeot 106 (povo D) neither that i've owned (own) have required anything in the way of parts, save [ir]regular oil changes and a downpipe on a fav. 1 outta 5/6 10-15yr old cars isnt bad! skoda - 45mpg ++++ pug - 60mpg both about group 5 both spacious inside (I'm 6ft and easily comfortable) both stupidly cheap. £100 will buy a good one! neither break go-go bits. stuff that goes wont stop you using it! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Seconded was pugboyracer said. Also 205 n/a diesel's I'm feeling 205s at the mo. A housemate's boyfriend used to have a NA derv one - it was rotten as a pear but kept passing MOTs and returning 55mpg round town. Lunacy.

The only downside to a 205 Diseasel is the steering....correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK only the 205TD had PAS, and certainly the 205 XLD I had was almost comically heavy to steer, even on stock rims and 155x13 remouldski F**k-All Terrain tyres. 50-55mpg though, will sit at 90mph all day and very very reliable.

I'd suggest either a pov-spec 205 or a VW Polo. Renault 5 Campus's can be picked up pretty cheaply at the moment too although I've not owned one personally so I would feel comfortable in recommending them as highly as the other two.

Lots of cars there I hadnt considered, 205s and polos e.t.c are a bit small for our needs + missus hates small cars. Astra size would be ideal. The Rover 600 suggestion has got me thinking tough.... Shame they didnt make it in a hatchback! Car Mechanics have done up a free one and it looks the bizz.

I bought a Mundano last year for £450, my brother met me at Heathrow with the thing I then drove it about 2100 miles over three weeks and gave it to my Brother - as he dropped me off at Heathrow. He then sold it for £675 ! It was a little thirsty, I think I put about $700 (£350) in gas in it and I had to get a puncture repaired, but really it was dirt cheap - worked out way better than renting something smaller / more economical.

The cheapest car I ever had was a Toyota Corolla GT Coupe RWD (AE86). Bought it in 1994 for 995 quid got a respray and a replacement wing for it (300 quid). Then when I moved to Hong Kong in 1995 it sold for 2300 quid ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Hmmm, my vote would be Skoda felicia. Yeah so what the smelly guy at work has one!! They're bullet proof and cheap to run.
I had drove one for a few weeks and loved it!! It was really fun, used to lean and lean but still grip. No matter how much I ragged it it used to do bout 40mpg!! Was a 1.3 MPI had 23,000 miles on it and cost us £500!!

I doubt you will find a cheaper car to run than a......... Fiat 126 ![](http://www.ajovalo.net/Historia/images/X78F126b.jpg) If you can find a decent one? or a mk3 golf diesel and run it on chip fat!

Mk 2 Polo.
Cheap, numerous, reliable, simple, economical.
A bit on the small side and for some reason they're nearly all red, but they go on for ever and ever and don't cost you much at all.

Afraid I'm another mk3 Astra man! Got given two a while back, both really nice cars, but one had a blown headgasket and some tit had started taking it apart and lost all the nuts and bolts! Lack of time and space meant I gave them to my cousin who's a banger racer. He was very happy with them too. ;D Passed up a Citroen ZX 1.4 with T&T for £30 recently, looked nice, but Mrs JS was with me.... JS: "zOMG That's a bargain!" Mrs JS: "Where are you planning to live if you buy it?" Ultimate in my family is my little bro Luke's diesel "Mega-Rat" Escort van - cost £70 in 2004 (including a tank of fuel), he immediately used it for several trips from Walthamstow to Sudbury and back, parked it for a year... then stuck a new battery on and is still using it daily! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

Out of all the £495 specials I`ve sold over the last 3 years, the ones that have caused the least headaches have been, in no particular order: Peugeot 106/205 Diesel, Mazda 323, Skoda Favorit & Felicia, Hyundai Pony, Honda anything, Nissan Sunny & Micra (but watch for rot on front cross member). They`re the ones that leap out as being ones I don't remember ever having any big problems with. 306s are great as well but tend to be a bit more than £500 if they're any good, though you may get a decent early one for that. Another good one is the Rover 216 with the Honda Engine, and the 600 of course IS a Honda but with nicer bodywork.
don't forget its a bit hard to go wrong with an old MK6 Escort - yeah you`ll have a bottom arm bush here and a window mech there but scrapyards are bursting with them and the Zetec is a nice engine - just remember the timing belts due at 100k on some of them so if its done 97k don't assume its been done.

Thinking about it, SL's Accord would be a good place to start! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Thanks JS! I didn’t like to suggest it myself, but the thought had crossed my mind. Way cooler than most of the above, I’d happily use it as my only car it’s so capable (I’ve been using it most of the time recently, and it was very competent on a blast down to London and back one evening to get Baz’s R11). Stuff cheap road tax, what’s £80 extra a year for a bit more refinement? I’ve had the cam belt done, and it’s <£500 too......

Skoda Favorit/Felicia... why? Here's why:
Timing chain - no need for cambelt being changed Easy to find with low mileage Low demand - cheap purchase price Impressive MPG - I recently drove a Felicia and achieved 46mpg Reliable I bought a Favorit on ebay about 2.5 years ago for £120, used it for a few months and sold it on for £300 You'll get an 8 year old Felicia for about £500 if you shop around - suprisingly capable with whatever you throw at it too, be it motorway/town runs
;D

Ive been eyeing up a couple of P reg 5 door astra 1400s in the local salvage yard... One has a dinted wing and broken headlight, the others has had its steering wheel snapped off (!?) Both easy repair circa 60k miles and £250 each After that though id have to MOT it, tax it and probably apply for a log book so thats creeping towards the £500 mark without factoring in any unexpected expense come the MOT. Ive got the parts to repair them on my dead 1.7 diesel astra so fixing one would be "free" The accord looks tempting but the missus wouldnt drive it and its too far away. Id drive it though ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I wish the missus liked Felicias, they're such huge bargains at the moment. Get a cheapo estate to fill full of curse word, reliable (I'm told) good MPG. "old fart" image, so it will never get pinched or get jealousy scratches down the side. I think they sound ideal. Maybe ill have to pull rank and TELL the wfe what car shes having ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

The late 1.3 Mpi's aren't even slow (as long as you don't buy the base L low compression model), pretty bloody nippy for a 1.3 ;D

Panda. Got my ole one for £325 with no tax but decent MOT. Runs cheap as anything (like 300 mile for £15 if you stick at 60 on the m'way!) spacious, had a washing machine the back with plenty of space. Okay I spent like £250 on new brakes but what do ya expect for a 17 yr old car thats never needed a thing doing to it ?! (and for a 900cc you can, at a push, get 96mph on the flat ;D)
