oldschoolcool I had an FRP bonnet on an FD come up at speed. Brown pants moment! I'm still waiting on parts from Kameari, my shopping list got a bit bigger, originally after forged pistons and bigger valves I ended up getting a few more toys including their twin idler to remove the chain tensioner. Kamari say it'll rev to 12,000rpm but I've 'only' got 10,000rpm springs ;-) Also got a full spare L18 engine, a spare L18 block and a few ancillaries now. Should be good for the foreseeable future.

so want to see this in the flesh will it be any where near ready for the gathering? Not much of a chance to be honest as I've got a much larger and more expensive project on the go at the moment... Although, I do have a spare engine I could throw, in theory it could on the back of a low loader. It's just not very presentable at the moment and I don't seem to have any free time.

The twin idler is a gorgeous bit of kit, made setting up the timing chain very easy given how much came off my block/head when they got decked. Word from the wise though....hold back on ordering the Kameari valve spring retainers - or buy the ones I'm not using! I have the 9K Kameari springs...and the Kameari retainers aren't a large enough diameter to fit them properly. The stock Nissan ones worked fine, but the Kameari ones were too small, so the shoulder of the spring was outside the face diameter of the retainer...not good. It is possible that the retainers are only meant for the 10K springs - s20 might have a better insight. Moar updates wanted

Thank you camerashy, I'll be making my builders life easier with the twin idler but a nightmare with the retainers, make him earn his money. I'm still waiting for parts so there really hasn't been any updates worth sharing. In the process of moving house again but this time I'll be able to bring it home instead of having a 200 mile round trip to work on it. Hopefully things will get back on track in a couple months. Do you know if there is a weld in baffled sump kit for the L4? I'd like to do the 'hammerhead' style extra capacity sump and baffle it, I guess anyone who can weld aluminium can do this, maybe when I get the exhaust done I can take a spare sump with me.

Once you get bored of replacing those spinning Doritos you'll find out for yourself.
Hopefully my forged pistons will be here soon along with the rest of the parts for the rebuild and then it's all systems go. Should be completing on the house/garage in a couple weeks so can bring the car home which will make working on it a lot easier, that 3 hour round trip with the toll road and speed scameras is getting tedious.
You should come and see it, I'll be about later today if you're free?

This is bloody incredible, I'm on OZ currently with a few contacts in Japan, usually living in Wales though, if you need any little bits I'd be more than happy to bring them over, need to go B road blasting with this and my GZ10. If you ever wanna shift the TRD seat i'll eat your arm.

If you ever wanna shift the TRD seat i'll eat your arm. Thank you The seat is actually a Checkman Racing one, very similar to the TRD one which is how I got confused when I only saw the low res images, it wasn't until it landed when I noticed the CMR logo. The taco is a TRD one, only replace that with a Kameari one if I can find one as they're discontinued. As for parts, thanks for the offer, most of the engine parts are en route but I'll send you a PM with a few bits I'm after. When are you back? My car is second to the house project that's currently taking up 99% of my free time and money.

The last of the parts from Kameari Engine Works arrived today, they'll soon be delivered to my engine builder so he can finally get around to putting it all together. Kameari forged pistons WPC coated bearings, high strength timing chain and light weight, big valved Metal head gasket and some stickers L4 Twin Idler gear to remove the spring/plastic timing chain tensioner This lot, along with my 2 previous deliveries should make a good powered, tractable motor. L18 block larger bores and 'eyebrowed' Kameari Engine Works forged pistons New standard con rods ARP con rod bolts WPC main and con rod bushes W53 head ported, flowed, CCed and other wizardry to make the most of what I have ARP head studs Kameari Engine Works light weight big valves IN/EX Kameari Engine Works bronze valve guides Kameari Engine Works 10,000rpm valve springs (with associated hardware, seats, collars, lash pads) Kameari Engine Works L4 Twin Idler Kameari Engine Works head gasket Kent Cams custom cam profile to make the most of my setup OER 45mm DCOE carbs Kameari Engine Works intake manifold Custom 4-1 exhaust manifold Kameari Engine Works light weight flywheel Baffled, winged sump My next order will be a new racing distributor, spindle gear, ignition coil, plugs and leads and then get it plugged in to an engine dyno and see what it can do. Some inspiration

My chosen engine builder has some spare time now as all his Formula Ford engine builds have been shipped out. He said a couple weeks. Problem is, the house has been all consuming, I've not even taken down the old concrete sectional garage, let alone built a new one. I need t pull my finger out... While browsing Yahoo Japan I found a poster from the '71 Japanese GP featuring the SCCN Bluebird P510 so I had to have it. Mori San from Kameari kindly bid and shipped it to me, along with a Kameari radiator cap. by , on Flickr Once christmas has f**ked off and I've had some time in the mountains I'll get on with the project, honest.

Just read this from start to finish. Absolutely brilliant thread I do love rare cars especially rare old race cars!
I love the 510 but the closest I have been is on Forza 4 making a rusty classic racer in off white a lot similar to yours weirdly.
I also made a Skyline GTR replica aswell...weird seeing photos of the real cars.
Looking forward to more updates!

Yeah, come on K, get yer finger out, lol. Last time I saw the Kia Ora Bluebird it was sad and sodden under a tarpaulin. I only lifted it up because I was trying to steal borrow a bolt to bodge fix Ralph the RX-4s oil cooler with... and there wasn't even one the right size on the Datto. In fact, there's not much of it that needs bolting down, lol Actually, quite impressed by your engine goodies. Missed those updates before. Should be vurrah nice when done

Bibbles Thank you. It's nice to hear other people like it too. I'd never seen one before in the flesh and now have only seen one other (USDM LHD 510 2 door) but there are a couple more over here now, still, pretty rare. ToolsnTrack, yeah, it's a slow burn. The engine has taken a while, but that's because I wanted it done right and how it would have been done in Japan when it was being raced. A few more bits to buy still, but it's 90% done. End result will be a few years away, I'm going with working first, then once I've had some fun, take it apart again and do the body work. luckyseven, being over 100 miles away doesn't help progress, I do really need to tidy up the engine bay while the engine is out, but I do have some very good excuses. Next year things will be different, I should have my garage built by March and the car moved over. Then I can progress with bolting it back together and tidying it up where I can.

The dummy build of the engine didn't go to plan. On closer inspection, one of the con rods was shorter than the others. Some over night parts from Japan sorted that issue: I also ordered some NOS engine mounts as my hunt for solid/poly mounts didn't find anything. I may see if I can get a set custom made but these will do for now. Engine should be complete finally after the holidays. Garage project is progressing nicely, the old one has been taken down, just need to finish clearing away, the land for the new base has been cleared and I'll start digging soon.
