A strictly hypothetical situation here...  If I were to buy a car insurance policy, paying monthly, what would be the cost if I were to cancel it after about 10 days? I'm aware that there is a 14 day "cooling off" period, and that within that time you entitled to cancel. Using Aviva as an example, I know they have a (roughly) £40 cancellation fee, but I've also read that they will charge you for the time used. What rate do they use for this time you've used? Say I were to pay a £60 deposit for the first month, then use 10 days and cancel, would it simply be a case of them charging (£60/30 days)*10 days + cancellation fee, or could it be more than that? The opinion of anyone with experience with this would be greatly appreciated! |

Ask the insurance company? Agreed. All companies will vary, so you'll need to ask to get a definite answer. |

Depends on the company and their rules / charges. For example mine (NFU) doesn't charge an admin fee for anything so duplicate certificate, change of address, change of vehicle (other than if different base premium) etc are all free whereas some companies will charge £30 if you tell them you have moved house.
Basically there are too many variables between companies for anyone to give you a definitive answer and only way of finding out, as people have already said, is to ask the insurer themselves what their terms and conditions are.

I had a policy with CO-OP... Iirc I cancelled it after 5 days - they charged me £25 cancellation fee plus £3 a day

I cancelled a policy within 14 days when it broke and would take me a long time to fix. The company charged me £50 or so for 'admin' and refunded the rest. That was with Adrian Flux.

Just out of interest, is this just so you can use a car for a few days or get it home? Temporary insurance might be a better bet, I've had that for £2.05 a day in the past, phone a proper insurance broker and NOT the crappy firms that come up if you Google "temporary insurance" |

This is just to use a car for a few days. Maybe I'll try calling a proper broker - none of the ones on Google would quote me for a 20 year old on Mum's 4.0 Jeep Wrangler...
Can you recommend any particular brokers?

Just thought this through abit.....slightly wrong, They can charge you for the service but no extras/charges...so you would have to pay 1/365th of the yearly cost per day that they covered you. They must refund within 14 days.
