Admittedly not the prettiest car in the world but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Very comfy and economical and has had a lot spent to keep it reliable and running strong for years to come. I’ve been using the car to commute back and forth from Yorkshire to Edinburgh and it’s been faultless. It’s unbelievably economical and has returned an average fuel economy figure of 67 mpg calculated brim to brim, not going by the trip computer. I've bought another Leon 1.8T so the Octavia is now surplus to requirements.
In the last 10000 miles it’s had the following work done:
New Timing belt, tensioners, and metal impeller water pump (SKF belt kit, Circoli water pump)
New auxiliary belt and tensioner
New front discs and pads
New rear coil springs
New thermostat
Brand New Skoda Wheel trims
Oil changes every 3-4k
In the last 500 miles, it’s had the following work done:
Full service including 5W-40 synthetic engine oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter.
Coolant changed, wiper blades and headlamp bulbs replaced
New rear dogbone engine mount
Oil cooler o-ring seals replaced
Boost pressure control vacuum hoses replaced with silicone ones
NSF window regulator replaced
Air conditioning compressor replaced, new o-rings fitted and system re-gassed (works perfectly)
Instrument cluster PCB capacitor solder joints and Resistor Bridge re-soldered
Injection Pump Timing and Idle injection quantity reset using VAG-COM VCDS diagnostics
It has front and back seats from a VW Golf mk4 GTi (the same car with a different badge) which are much comfier and better looking than the originals. These are in really excellent condition, pretty much as new.
Other good points :
Very good (6mm) matching continental tyres all round
Massive load space with the seats down, very practical
Not so good points :
A few scrapes, minor dents and scratches as you would expect at this age.
A little bit of rust along the bottom of the boot lid, underneath is absolutely solid though so no MOT concerns
Boot doesn't unlock with the central locking, but opens fine with the key.
So there you go, she’s not going to win any beauty contests but she’s a good dependable, safe and economical car. Absolutely no smoke whatsoever, even on full throttle.
