I saw Sir Stirling Moss interviewed at Goodwood one year and the interviewer asked if it was true that Lewis Hamilton had refused the offer to swap cars with Sir Stirling because the W196 didn't have proper safety harnesses. He very succinctly replied that the modern crop of drivers thought they knew all about safety but if they knew about fire then they'd know they didn't want harnesses... thus neatly illustrating the gulf between talent, ability, and heroism. Comments on Mr Hamilton with-held in accordance with RR Mantra of Positivity Personally the idea of faffing around clambering over doorbars and with harnesses every time I want to pop up to Waitrose for lobster and premier cru champers fills me with horror, I certainly wouldn't inflict it on my passengers and expect them to ever speak to me again. I also wouldn't want harnesses and cage in a car without at the very least access to a webbing cutter and window hammer. And preferably a fire extinguisher. It's a close thing but I think I'd prefer a fighting chance of surviving multiple trauma in ITU to the certainty of dying from drowning upside-down in a ditch or burning to death. I learned my crashing skills mostly on bikes, and I'd prefer to at least maintain the illusion of being in control of my own destiny, lol.

That's a really good point and something I will bear in mind, I definitely want a cage and harnesses for a convertible that will be used for track days and would have got a fire extinguisher but hadn't thought about the webbing cutter. Thanks.

Speaking of roll cages, it always makes me wonder at the 4x4 brigade, ( and i somewhat include myself here) who upon getting thier chosen chariot of choice, bung on bigger tyres, lift the suspension, lift the body, upset the already high centre of gravity, chuck on a roofrack, fill it with 'stuff', make the c o g even worse ........... The last thing that seems to get thought about is roll over protection!
