It originally lived near Loch Lomond and was brought to Northern Ireland about ten years ago. It had a lot of work and a respray done by a Saab mechanic in Jerrets Pass. It came up for sale when the owner was moving house and would have no storage facilities. It hadn't been used much since it was restored so has needed some recommissioning over the last year. They drive and sound like no other car and gets loads of positive comments wherever it goes.

Thanks lads for the comments. Here's another one of it on one of my favourite roads to the Knockagh War Memorial. This road was used as a stage in the Circuit of Ireland in 1979/80, can't remember which year, and it's a fantastic road to drive. photobucket.com/user/peterhwilson/media/imagejpg6_zps2b587538.jpg.html] [/URL]

Thought it was about time for an update on my Saab. I took it for its MOT in September which thankfully it passed first time. Unfortunately on the way home I started to have some gear selection problems. At first I thought the car had just got a bit hot and bothered in the MOT centre which was part of the problem. It tuns out the plastic hydraulic pipe from the clutch master to slave cylinder had expanded and shot all the fluid over the top of the gearbox. I tried bleeding the system but it looks like the seals had gone. Managed to get a repair kit for both cylinders off one of the guys on the V4 forum and had a hydraulic braided pipe made up by a local company. They even did it in red like the original! By the time I got all this sorted we were well into Autumn so the car has had very little use only taken out on the odd day. I had it out for a spin a few days after New Year and unfortunately came across a fatal accident. It got me thinking about running around in classics and the potential results of having an accident in one. Add to this I was again struggling to use a clutch due my dodgy left leg and lower back problems. This resulted in me having a bit of a downer and putting the car up for sale. I didn't expect to get much response but actually had a couple of guys who were really genuinely interested. Unfortunately I then ran into a few electrical problems and lost some of the lights. As this was the middle of January I had absolutely no inclination to start playing with early 70s electrics. I withdrew the car from sale and had to apologise profusely to the individuals who were keen on purchasing the car. I felt and still do like a time waster but I really didn't want to part with the car just yet. So the car is still with me and I have recently bought a downdraft Weber with a free flow air filter to fit. The old Ford carb can be a bit dodgy. Outings in the car have been limited although I did have a good run over the hills in the snow a couple of weeks ago. Well it is a Swedish car so should feel at home. Enough waffle I'll put a few recent photos up.

There is no more risk to having a smash in a classic as there was when it was new, if your wearing a seatbelt and have a crash you will be ok. Way I look at it is this, new cars have the internal safety features added eg airbag but from a construction point of view modern cars are made of a lot more plastic than a classic car. I reckon in a crash a modern car would come of worst compared to a classic. I think you are worrying too much

Lovely car. I have come close to buying a 96 on a couple of occasions, I think they are an absolute design classic and being Swedish, they get extra cool points in my book. I can understand concerns about safety. I don't think there is any denying that passenger safety in any older car will be worse than an equivalent newer car. Technology allows for improvement. Even 'safe' cars from in period, like a Saab, or a Volvo, would not pass any NCAP tests today. Crumple zones and energy absorption engineering on their own save many lives today that would have resulted in fatalities in older cars. How you react to that, is your own choice, it's about what levels of risk people are comfortable with. So many things we do every day have risk, cars like yours bring colour and good feelings to your life though. I'm sure you could look to make some changes to help relax about it more. E.g. Improve brakes? Lighting? Best tyres possible? Rally rollcage? Good luck with it, it's a beautiful sunny day where I am, I hope you enjoy a drive today.

Hmmm roll cage now there's a thought. Always fancied having a go at night navigation rallies. I think that was a phase i was going through. I'll not be giving up on classics/ retros just yet as I get too much fun and enjoyment out of them. Still keep buying Classic Land Rover and I'm always on the lookout for an old Series Landie so hopefully that will be my next classic. Ive wanted one for ages abd still havent bagged one. Having said that I'm trying hard not to go and have a look at a Saab 900 and an Audi 80 Sport both from the early 90s that are advertised here at the moment. On the aspect of safety I don't know why I'm suddenly worrying about it as when I used to race bicycle time trials one of our training runs was over Shanes Hill which was one of the main routes to the port of Larne. It wasn't unusual to chase HGVs off the hill at 50-60 mph with only a bit of lycra on and some expanded polystyrene on your head. Got away with that for years and then had a low speed accident one night which damaged my back. Sods law.
