BMW E46 318i Petrol
Blue (and brown if you count the muck on it)
1999
MOT till April 23rd
Just turned 139K, not much service history - assume none.
Tax (irrelevant now thanks to new car laws) - but it will be SORNed tonight.
£300.
I bought this a while back as a stop gap to help me between cars. Over a year later and 18K miles on, I still have it, and i still use it to commute 60 miles a day. I've just picked up a new Volvo replacement for it, so I'm offering this up now, in teh hope it may help someone else out in time of need.
It's nothing special, a pretty standard E46 - 1.9 petrol engine. It is SE spec - it has climate control and a 6 CD changer - both of which work beautifully.
It also has air conditioning, which also works. I've been using it every few weeks during winter to make sure it still runs come the summer.
It has the tool kit in the boot, and a space saver spare wheel. Battery is in good health, although I rarely leave the car alone for more than a couple of days.
It's surprisingly economical too. Running around in winter I'm topping 40mpg, 45mpg was quite achievable during high summer.
During my tenure;
- A new spring on the front
- Serviced, all fluids including gearbox oil - every 9K miles.
- New radiator and coolant (old one developed a pinhole)
- New rear brakes, including new handbrake shoes (required for last MOT).
- Acquired a second set of alloys, and fitted winter tyres.
The car will come with the set of summer tyres that I have, but for the right price I can include both sets.
Most things are fine - but it is not without its problems;
- I only have one key, and it's not a remote one. BMW quoted £140 for another remote key, or £55 if you wanted a spare non-remote.
- Boot only opens with the key. (the dashboard reports that the boot is open, so I'm assuming that it has a bad connection somewhere along the line).
- The rocker cover does leak some oil - I've topped up a litre in about 7K miles. The gasket underneath is prone to leaking, and you can either replace it or stick some jointing compound on it to help seal it (Hylomar blue should do it). It also dribbles onto the hot exhaust, and can cause an oily smell if you leave the car standing while running for a period of time.
- there's a tapping from the engine, it usually disappears after a good few miles of motorway work. I have a set of 8 new tappets here that I'll include.
- Gear lever is a little sloppy, and does make it a little harder to select gears when cold.
- It is currently on a set of winter tyres (Goodyear Ultragrip 9). I aim to sell it at £300 with the summer tyres I have for it. 2 of them are borderline legal, but I have 2 other part worn tyres that should swap straight on them.
- Most panels have some sort of mark on them. There are also a couple of stone chips here and there, and there's a lovely scratch (paint only though) on the bonnet where the horse decided to try and take a chunk out of it.
I own a horse, so the back seat has a cloth to try and keep the muck from spreading too far, but it has made a bit of a mess of one of the back footwells. I will give it a clean before it goes, but it is a working car, and certainly not a showroom model.
It's not anything flashy, but it served me well for the last 16 months or so, and there is probably a bit of life still left in the old girl.
Looking for £300 as it is, or £400 with both sets of wheels. Viewings welcome, but test drives will be restricted - my insurance ended on the car today, and it will be SORNed in an hour or two.
