Ian this is brilliant - given me a right giggle to start the day with. No idea how you manage to juggle so many cars, I'd have got caught out well before they ended up on a drive together! But I've been thinking, surely the solution to the 11th commandment, is to own 3 of them instead?

Sometimes it's about give and take. My lass loves designer clothes and spends her spare cash on them, so if she ever mentions money spent on cars I bring that up and she drops the subject

I have been up to 4 Volvo 850's but Caroline only knows about two, I have no idea where she thinks all the parts for a second engine came from, I trust my secret is safe with you Ian, and no beens will be spilled at the Gathering

But I've been thinking, surely the solution to the 11th commandment, is to own 3 of them instead? Err as long as only 1 is ever at home - should work fine..... This tale recounts something of a "high point" or "low point" in my car collecting history depending on your viewpoint. I may or may not have had 2 or possibly 3 Carlton saloons at one stage in that period - but photo's of the third are proving elusive so I may not be able to tell that story - one of them was a MOT'd and taxed car that I bought just because the doors were good!!! Anyway glad it's been enjoyed by a few - perhaps someone else will share similar circumstances

My ex used to know I'd bought something else when I randomly took her out to dinner.

Brilliant story, and one that I'm sure will ring true for many of us.
I must admit that last year when I had to break the news that I'd just bought a 5th Sunbeam shell, I explained that the spare panels on it alone easily justified the purchase price (which is true) even though I had absolutely no intention of putting the plasma cutter to it as I'd given the impression I would be doing 'shortly', and instead will be building it into a rough stage rally car instead.
The fifth Sunbeam wouldn't in itself have been a problem if it hadn't also been that including both of our daily drivers it took us up to a total of 11 cars in all, all stored at home. Even that didn't sound too bad, until it dawned on me that I also have two non-road legal offroad specials, the much needed car transporter trailer and a ski boat also stored at home, not to mention my small motorcycle collection (now up to eight) and huge stocks of spares of all sorts, including about 15 engines and half a dozen or so rear axles.
Luckily my wife is one of the most understanding women imaginable, and although she isn't exactly in favour of the status quo she doesn't make a big thing out of it either. Anyway, I think for the average wife multiple cars is still preferable to multiple women?
At least in my case I don't try to hide the cost of my projects. Typically buying cheap and making many of the parts myself from scratch there aren't normally huge costs involved anyway....although I also must admit that I've occasionally understated what I've paid for things a little from time to time.
I would never though (unlike someone I know locally) remortgage my house to buy a really nice rare car without even my wife's feintest knowledge! That is just crazy.
If the worst they have to worry about their other half is a few cars or their parts squirrelled away somewhere then they shouldn't have any real concerns..... but I'm sure that's not how all women would see it!

A definite danger of Retros. No matter how rare or obscure, another will always seem find you once you have one in need of attention! I seem to have 2orMore of most of my cars.. Cortina's,Beta's,Accord's,Z360,Prelude,Integra... At least my CR-X are of different generations!

Fantastic, I am very inspired! So far I've only had two Beetles, one of which was written off, so I have a long way to go before I reach your level!

Ahh currency exchange rates - there are GBP (Great Britain Pounds) and "Lisa Pounds" current exchange rate varies depending on items Tyres, MOT, VED, Insurance, brakes and normal maintenance for instance always 1:1 exchange But a slightly more favorable exchange rate has been brought into play on occasions in order to minimise stress in the relationship due to expenditure on non essential large parts - like spare engines, stainless steel exhaust systems etc normally 1 GBP = 0.5 "Lisa Pounds"

I almost feel like this thread could have been written about me, except mine would be mostly Fords and Alfas!! One of the reasons the thread is so entertaining for so many of us, is that the story applies to most of us.... Very enjoyable, keep it coming...

Ahh currency exchange rates - there are GBP (Great Britain Pounds) and "Lisa Pounds" current exchange rate varies depending on items This is the safest way. What I do is run it through various currencies. So to the question, "How much was that?" the answer is immediately in GPB, which is then given a rough US$ conversion. When asked again what it comes to in Peso, the next conversion is inevitably into Malaysian Ringgit and so to Peso. Amazingly, the final answer is never more than PHP5,000, which is deemed an acceptable figure!

This is brilliant. I had a 12v GSi Carlton (E959FBV where are you now?) stupidly traded for a G reg Cavalier 4x4 - not the GSi, a lowly 2 litre in whirlpool white with absolutely no spec. That was a great car, totally understated and it drove like it was on rails, it was a daily challenge to see how quickly roundabouts could be taken before it'd slide. Happy days.

It's a sign of Retro Ride addiction when you're borrowing garages of friends and family.
Anazingly my missus totally gets it, despite early moans that whilst a retro slept secure in the garage her then nearly new 3 series cabrio toughed it out on the street.
Problems came when the collection reached four and with at least two cars in the close at any one time. Cue lots of tutting and dodgy looks off the neighbours. The solution, move one car to my parents. The problem here was that this displaced his pride and joy (a 57 plate 'Chevrolet' Tacuma, nice!) from its garage. Now the tutting and hints like 'When are you going to sell that?' switched from the neighbours to the old man.
Luckily a few weeks back I did sell the Del Sol so the Daewoo, sorry 'Chevvy', is back in its burrow. As it stands the E30 is about to have its rusty bits cut out and all the exterior trim refurbished, plus some shiny new bits bolted on, so plenty to keep me out of trouble and empty my already meagre wallet. But, I never take my eye off the web, papers, auctions etc. Supermarkets are the worst, home of the little advert placed by a pensioner hopefully like my old man who cleans the car every day and does about 2000 miles per year. Just missed a really cheap (£900) low mileage stock E36 318iS and better still a 1988 Corolla GTi, used to see the old girl driving it, must have been in her 80s. No money, both slipped through my fingers. But, if the funds were there I'd have bought them both and the last thing on my mind would have been where I was going to put them!

brilliant.... this cracked me up, i have had this very dicussion with my wife, sensible daily and a toy tucked in the garage, that has not gone down to well.... but hey ho, my wife is pretty switched on, she know that certain parts i have in my shed did not cost £12 of ebay and it was a bargain buy! but also she does get it she drove me to birmingham from our house in essex just to look at a car, and then she took me back the week later to collect it :-)
but when you add up, hair, makeup, nails, shoes, costa coffe mummy meetings etc etc... i would say we are even on our playmoney expendature lol
