take the starter out, clean the postive and the engine earth up, and strip the starter down, Sand the brushes down, and the comm as well, make sure theres no oil or grease on the magenets or the windings, Clean the bronze or brass bushings on each end , and likewise inside the outer can, light bit of machine oil and whack it all back together. Worked wonders with my t4 and a starter that wouldnt start it in the mornings (original starter with 190,000 on it) Now its worked amazingly for the last 20,000

popped under to see access for the starter - looks like a simple, easy to do job - famous last words, normally!

Chassis is solid as a rock! But there is a leak from the gearbox.

TOday I spent a couple of hours with the UMM.

Disconnected the battery!

Crawled underneath and checked access!

yep, you can see all three bolts - tight access though and max of a quarter turn of the ratchet or spanner!

Eventually managed to get all the bolts undone and tried to wiggle the starter out - from the bottom - nah! From the top- nah?

Plan B

start to remove the access panel over gearbox and heater panel.

You have to remove the seats (four nuts and pull off).

Then the seat belt mountings from the floor

remove the carpet

Unscrew the access panel on the floor and pull up.

Handbrake is still mounted so won't go up to far.

Then it's remove the screws from the heater panel

and pull it back as far as you can!

It's now that you discover there are two hidden screws behind the dashboard! Oh curse word, you say!!! Then you look at the side of the dash and realise there are two screws each side. Undo these and you can pull it away enough to be able to remove the starter.

Refitting should be easier as access from the top is possible now.

Mrs MO is at home so no stealing the vacuum to clean it while she's not watching!!

I used to live in Chertsey but I don't remember seeing any Umms about. They're pretty hard to miss.

Today's episode of Sesame Street is brought to you by the letters T and R, the words trim and rust and the number 8. Also taking part are a drill, screwdriver, ratchet and 10mm socket, and molegrips.

Big Bird had left for the day so the cookie monster set to work.

Screwdriver out, he attacked the side trim, all held on by chromed phillips headed self tappers.

T is for Trim, there are four pieces of trim per side and all hide the letter R - for rust.

Before the cookie monster started attacking the trim, the UMM looked like this

It was then that the cookie monster noticed the R - for rust - there was rather a lot, but was he worried, no, as he had a coffee and a cookie in the house to have once he'd finished!

So he set to work again and did the other side!

Today's Sesame Street starred Cookie Monster, Big Bird, the letters R & T, the words trim and rust and plastic trim panels. How many plastic trim panels, Count? One trim, that's one trim, two trim, two trim, three trim, we haven't finished counting, four trim, and one more makes five, six is another and then we have seven and the final one is eight, the number of the day!

The speedo looks like the one in the Citroen Visa C15 van I used to drive 20 years ago. I spent so much time in that van its hard to forget, especially as it was so slow.

The house with the Mini used to have a mk2 fiesta blocking it in too, I asked about the mini but oh no its not for sale was the reply,

Today's UMM jobs include dismantling the front end.

I have removed the bumper, the lights and grille - it's amazing how little is left after that. Once away from the edges, the body is looking OK.

Task for tomorrow is carpets out of the cabin, and if I have time, refit of starter motor.
