I used to drive past two of these every day in Chertsey Surrey on my way to work, thought they were a cheap copy of a land rover, they are not there anymore.

take the starter out, clean the postive and the engine earth up, and strip the starter down, Sand the brushes down, and the comm as well, make sure theres no oil or grease on the magenets or the windings, Clean the bronze or brass bushings on each end , and likewise inside the outer can, light bit of machine oil and whack it all back together. Worked wonders with my t4 and a starter that wouldnt start it in the mornings (original starter with 190,000 on it) Now its worked amazingly for the last 20,000

Love these, saw a "surf-wagon" one in deepest west cornwall whilst on hols last year, will see if i can dig out pics. Keep the pics coming as you delve a bit deeper, but as she stands it doesnt look too bad rust-wise. In Perranporth? Sure I've seen that come to think of it! Can't find the photo I'm afraid but this was last summer near St Just, and its been on my "want list" ever since! I'll def take a photo this year if i spot it again. Watching this with interest.☺

popped under to see access for the starter - looks like a simple, easy to do job - famous last words, normally!
Chassis is solid as a rock! But there is a leak from the gearbox.

TOday I spent a couple of hours with the UMM. Disconnected the battery! Crawled underneath and checked access! IMG_1216 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr yep, you can see all three bolts - tight access though and max of a quarter turn of the ratchet or spanner! Eventually managed to get all the bolts undone and tried to wiggle the starter out - from the bottom - nah! From the top- nah? Plan B start to remove the access panel over gearbox and heater panel. You have to remove the seats (four nuts and pull off). Then the seat belt mountings from the floor remove the carpet Unscrew the access panel on the floor and pull up. IMG_1220 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr Handbrake is still mounted so won't go up to far. Then it's remove the screws from the heater panel and pull it back as far as you can! It's now that you discover there are two hidden screws behind the dashboard! Oh curse word, you say!!! Then you look at the side of the dash and realise there are two screws each side. Undo these and you can pull it away enough to be able to remove the starter. IMG_1225 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr et voila! IMG_1229 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr Refitting should be easier as access from the top is possible now. Found another 4p and a swatch watch.

I used to drive past two of these every day in Chertsey Surrey on my way to work, thought they were a cheap copy of a land rover, they are not there anymore. I remember those two, just up the road from a house that always had a grasstrack mini on a trailer parked outside. I think one of my neighbours had one too as I remember thinking they were the same as his.

Today's episode of Sesame Street is brought to you by the letters T and R, the words trim and rust and the number 8. Also taking part are a drill, screwdriver, ratchet and 10mm socket, and molegrips. Big Bird had left for the day so the cookie monster set to work. Screwdriver out, he attacked the side trim, all held on by chromed phillips headed self tappers. T is for Trim, there are four pieces of trim per side and all hide the letter R - for rust. Before the cookie monster started attacking the trim, the UMM looked like this IMG_1175 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr part way through, the UMM looked like this! IMG_1238 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr It was then that the cookie monster noticed the R - for rust - there was rather a lot, but was he worried, no, as he had a coffee and a cookie in the house to have once he'd finished! So he set to work again and did the other side! IMG_1241 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr He wondered how this R for rust could have appeared on both sides of his UMM? IMG_1243 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr Ah, he said! That's where his mud pies had gone! Maybe there were more on the other side? mmmmmmmm IMG_1244 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr coooooookkkkkkkiiiieeeeeeeeee Today's Sesame Street starred Cookie Monster, Big Bird, the letters R & T, the words trim and rust and plastic trim panels. How many plastic trim panels, Count? One trim, that's one trim, two trim, two trim, three trim, we haven't finished counting, four trim, and one more makes five, six is another and then we have seven and the final one is eight, the number of the day!

The speedo looks like the one in the Citroen Visa C15 van I used to drive 20 years ago. I spent so much time in that van its hard to forget, especially as it was so slow.

The house with the Mini used to have a mk2 fiesta blocking it in too, I asked about the mini but oh no its not for sale was the reply, the umm's were parked at the end of pound road where it joins bridge road,

Well, today has been productive. Starter motor hasn't come back yet - will be here Tuesday, so I spent part of today playing inside the garage and did this! flic.kr/p/rFsXY7The first start up since 2000. After I had that joy, I decided to play UMM. IMG_1176 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr So, I had a precariously placed glass rear window needing somewhere to go and a horrible piece of perspex needing removed. IMG_1294 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr It involved a wash. IMG_1292 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr A removal. IMG_1298 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr A fit! IMG_1295 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr IMG_1297 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr Ah, better!!! Then, I thought, how does that bonnet come off? IMG_1303 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr Oh! IMG_1299 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr and how much better is this? IMG_1305 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr cool turbo intercooler graphics ... IMG_1304 by messerschmitt owner, on Flickr
