I've obtained an online quote for European breakdown cover for my '68 Merc and both AA and RAC come out at just under £50. The online comparison sites aren't working for my age of car so I wondered if anyone had any experience/recommendations on getting cover for the journey a bit cheaper.

Well can't speak for European cover, but for UK I've never had a problem with Green Flag for cover. Been with them from their early days (and now also have MayDay Rescue cover with them via my Caravan Club Membership too). They were the first port of call at one time if you were a diy spannerman and so all you wanted was recovery to home. Give them a call, see what they offer.
