I must admit, that 'shop of the MGB does look pretty sweet. Kinda reminds me of a Spitfire (plane) and would look totally awesome with a V12 on stubby pipes That said, the BMW and Golf are both a MASSIVE no for me. They just look sh1t in my eyes. There's just no flow of lines to work with the wheels. No fluidity of shape. I think it's the boxyness of the body tub. It doesn't seem to work with the style of car. The Mini works, I think cos it has more rounded corners if that makes sense?! The MGB really seems to work (at least in profile), again I think because of it's curves

What's worth remembering when designing/planning a project like this, is that twenties and thirties cars taper towards the front so the firewall is considerably narrower than the rear half of the body shell. If you just cut off the front panels of a modern(ish) car and place a deuce grille shell at the front the lines don't flow together. If you were really dedicated to the idea you could cut a wedge shape section from the roof, bulkhead & floor (sounds dead easy when you say it!) to try and mimic the proportions of an early ford.
The Audi TT drawing looks very good but I'd imagine, with the wider axle to put the wheels outside the body it would be very wide. The Anglia works quite well because it's a smaller car to begin with and all the other custom work means it doesn't just look like a stock car with the wings chopped off.
Just my opinion though.

Inspiration pic Might be tricky to make it work around the inner wings/bulkhead

Putting a nice dress on a pig doesn't make it a supermodel. You can't change the size and proportion of what's going on underneath.
Postwar cars are proportioned totally differently to pre-war upright models, as ratchart has said, the lengths you will need to go to to make one look 'right' are considerable. You really are talking narrowing/pie cutting the while bodyshell. For it to have the right relationship to the wheel size and placement.
It really would be far easier just to start with more appropriate base material, or you just end up sinking hundreds of hours into changing that that don't need changing on a more appropriate base car.

*I think this could work if it was based on something else (not a dually), and was a bit more complete? (x)

This... It's the grille treatments which are most horrendous tbh. *n

It's definitely always the front end that's the problem. The body tub itself is the easy bit to make look right but unlike the pre-war designs, there's no clean bit of bodywork you can split to get the look. Some come close, some come nowhere near. This isn't too bad. It's not perfect, but that can be forgiven because it's mental. Twin V8 engined Mazda MX5.

I was mulling over what on earth I could do with the very rusty MGBGT I currently have sat on my parents drive when I threw together this photoshop Well that looks friggin sweet! I thought I'd start a thread (couldn't find one that already existed) for hot rods with tubs made from modern(ish) monocoque bodies, as I'd like to see some more. Here are some that I found... Well, I recognise that drawing Here is another one I did, about a year earlier It was a bit of a thing of mine at the time, and I still like the idea of it but a lot of the time the proportions are not balanced well enough for the wheel positions to suit the modern vehicle shape.

I think comparing them to traditional hot rods is kinda not the point. They have a completely different vibe. They are essentially the same idea but have a very different aesthetic. If you look at them as a traditional rod then yes, the proportions don't work in a lot of examples, but look at them as a separate style and a lot of them work very well in my eyes. I love the golf and the 2002, I think they work well, although some examples on here definately need something different on the front in my eyes.
I'm not planning to build a mgb rod myself (skill and space dictate that) but I do think it could work. If I were I think I would keep the front inner wings and bonner as much as possible though, as I think it would give it more of a volksrod style, and taper to the front more.
