On a visit to Quorn I saw that my "Man Shed" (- well 20Ton Brakevan) was in the yard and so I used up a couple of half finished spray cans and clear coated the lower part of the side woodwork and bits of black on the underframe. It really needs to go into the shed for a proper repaint but this touch up will keep it a bit smarter in the intrim. In fact, I may well buy some more spray cans to do the whole side! I see from the earlier posts in this thread that it was repainted March 2017 so, just over 6 years out in all weathers.

I returned to Quorn with two more clear coat spray cans... I then went back to Rothley and helped the team put the new section of headstock into wagon #16.

Loughborough Engine Shed was open for guided "Boscastle shed Tours" at the weekend. These have restarted following the shed refurbishment work and scheduled take place on the second weekend each month. Inside the shed, there has a bit more space, as the frames etc of Thornbury Castle have been moved to Quorn, together with the boiler, ready for movement off site (To Tyseley?). 70013 Oliver Cromwell is still awaiting its boiler and final machining of rods. 777 Sir Lamiel is steadily being worked on with one tender bogie removed and being re assembled. The 04 still needs a new front firebox tube plate and the chassis awaits the wheels and axleboxes to be fitted. The Ivatt std 2 46521, is being stripped ready for 10 year overhaul (most of this work is scheduled to take place at Tyseley). Work on 34039 Boscastle, has concentrated on finishing piping up the tender (It had been on display at Quorn earlier), the boiler is still at LMS. The Black 5 45491 is still having its boiler rework done. 6990 Witherslack Hall has it's boiler back in place and insulation fitted together, with most of its boiler cladding. It will be repainted then returned to traffic around September.

The headstock repair was finished last week together with more bodywork patching. I did get a bit distracted getting my XJ 600 up and running to go for it's MoT....slight problem with the brakes though means the retest is on Thursday...

More progress on the 16T wagon has seen the buffers refitted, drawhook replaced and screw coupling installed. ....and the XJ600 passed its mot and is up for sale with one offer already, so my "Two wheel and 600cc" adventure will be coming to an end.

There is a lot to see this weekend with the "Railways at Work" event. Seven locomotives are moving around Lbro before 9.30! With the return to service of Witherslack Hall, 4 other steam locomotives, 3 diesels and a DMU. Four passenger rakes, two "Pick Up goods rakes and the Windcutters (16T minerals), on both days, means it is an intensive timetable ( latest version now on the GCR website). Lots of live parcels loading and unloading etc. to show how the railways served customers in the 50/60's.

Our wagon #16 is very nearly finished with only 3 small steel strips to go onto the floor and end. The vacuum pipe has been fitted but still needs its hoses.

The Windcutters were out together with my brakevan and a deliberately dirty 9F for the "Railway at Work" gala.

I obviously need to get into this big train set lark. The bodywork, welding and paint matches my skillset almost exactly

Hi Ian Well you do have the Swanage Railway local to you and I'm sure they would welcome your skills! (Not sure about a turbine powered Bulleid Pacific though?). My XJ600 went to a new owner on Saturday so I am now motorbikeless.

My XJ600 went to a new owner on Saturday so I am now motorbikeless. Phil, Swanage Railway and I have a strange relationship. They do absolutely no train racing but have developed a knack of removing humongous amounts of cash from me when SWMBO and I take the grandsprogs for a choo-choo ride. Ian

Glad that you are helping to keep the Swanage Railway solvent Ian...and the Grandchildren suitably informed! We have nearly finished wagon #16 having bolted on the side door and put more patch plates in on the floor and fixed end.

The Black wagon is finished so the Ops Dept have been to Swithland and saw this one... So brought it to Rothley and we started by cleaning out the tree! It has a double skin, which means it was used by ICI for transporting Soda Ash We are seeing which sections of the outer skin need to be replaced.

As the inner skin is pretty solid, and it was an ICI wagon, we will be restoring it to that condition to add a bit of variety to our endeavours. (as per 00 models). We will still have 25 Grey wagons for our "lengthy train" but the other 5 in alternative liveries. There are also a new range of 00 scale 16T minerals being released by Accurascale. They came and measured up some of our wagons a year ago. The exact paint colour is still to be determined.

I wasn't aware of the double skin variants, interesting. Can't imagine the welder is going to get too much of a break doing that one!

Hi PHUQ We have made more progress and have started to remove some of the c**p that is trapped between the two skins. As you can see the root for the small tree was about three feet long and went the width of the side door.
