Overview
For sale we have a fantastic, 1997 E36 BMW 323i SE with 2.5 litre, straight-six petrol engine.
This vehicle benefits from some genuine M3 parts such as parts the body kit, wing mirrors and alloys. Additionally, the engine had a bottom end rebuild by BMW (receipted) and the car has had a lot of time and money put in to it, to make it look and drive as it does now.
The details of this car are as follows;
History
The car was first registered 1st August 1997 and has had a total of 6 owners. The last owner purchased the car in 2006 and has since lavished the car with much care and attention.
The history file is very complete, with every stamp in the service book up to 144,000 miles, every MOT certificate since 2001, all tax discs since 2007 and a stack of receipts proving the expenditure on the car. There are currently 150,300 miles showing on the clock which we believe to be genuine given the large stack of paperwork with the car to support it.
The vehicle is HPI clear (aside from private plates) and it now sits back on its original registration. The car has an MOT until 20th August 2016. The only advisories were for low tyre tread on the rear tyres. All four tyres were replaced and are like new.
Body
The bodywork is in good condition overall, with the previous, Detailer owner keeping the Boston Green Metallic paintwork shining and well protected from the elements.
We have taken care of some slight bubbling to the rear arches and driver’s door bottom, which are all now sporting fresh paint and are solid.
As mentioned above, the car sports some genuine, M3 body kit parts, including front and rear spoilers and door mirrors. Also fitted are M3 mud flaps, M3 rear lights, matt black kidney grills and some DEPO Halo projector front light units.
The car however is 18 years old and does have a few imperfections, including some stone chips, lacquer peel on the top edge of the rear bumper and some slight bubbling to the off-side front wheel arch. However, this is purely cosmetic and the arch is not rotten.
Overall the car looks very presentable and receives positive comments.
Mechanical/Running gear
The mechanicals of the vehicle are in very good order. Starting with the engine, at 90,696 miles, the engine block and pistons were replaced by Almondbury BMW, with a receipt showing almost £2,800 being spent. Needless to say, the engine still runs exceptionally well and is silky smooth.
There is also a performance, panel air filter fitted and the ECU has been re-mapped and the car dyno’d at 181 BHP.
In more recent times a lot of money has been spent not only in the regular servicing and brakes etc, but four new tyres are fitted, new bushes and suspension arms as required, new brake backing plates, new radiator, new shock absorbers….the list goes on! Prior to the last MOT, full front-to-rear brake pipes and all flexis were also replaced.
The car rides on M3 Style 24, staggered alloys with as-new tyres and genuine M3 springs and uprated struts. We have just replaced both rear wheel bearings for the new owner’s peace of mind, as they were beginning to hum. This was finished off with a full, laser geometry set-up. This gives the car great poise and handling as you would expect from a sporty, E36 model.
Finally, a Remus cat-back exhaust system with twin rear pipes is fitted which is not at all noisy or boomy on cruise, but sounds fantastic when utilising the full rev range of the car!
Interior
The interior of this E36 is a very special place to be. Not only do you have the beautiful sound of a BMW straight-six engine in the background, but you are surrounded by a superbly contrasting interior which is all black, except for the light grey leather seats, door panel inserts and original grey headlining.
The carpet is protected with black mats with green edging to complement the paintwork. Coupled with the dark walnut trim, the cabin looks and feels very classy indeed.
Topping this off is the full, SE electrics pack, a JVC stereo with uprated speakers, original BMW computer and fully functioning climate control that blows nice and cold.
The car is fitted with a Thatcham 1, remote Cobra alarm and immobiliser. The installation certificate is present, along with two remote controls and all four, original BMW keys.
The full brochure pack, tool kit, first aid kit, glove box torch, warning triangle, spare wheel, wheel brace and jack are all present. This BMW really is very complete indeed.
Summary
This E36 BMW is a really complete and mechanically sound example that needs little more than enjoying. It has had a lot of money spent on it in recent months to maintain its condition and offers many smiles per mile, either as a daily driver or a pampered show/summer car.
It’s not a full-blown M3, but we feel a nice homage to such a great sports saloon.
