Ah fair play. Good job on the underside, I wouldn't fancy spraying Schutz on my back with the car that close. ...me neither mate I´m almost sure Oldbus is wearing a Schutz-Anzug in these moments. nice one, very clever! Progress at a pace, looking great. With a mattress in there, ace place to kip at a car meet. ..with a bit of luck there should be room for two in there Update 17.07 Before i fit the axle i covered the top half of the tank in wax and dropped it back into place. To stop the joint from rusting again where both halves are welded together, i organised some of that edge protection stuff.... and filled it with wax.... and knocked it on to the joint in the middle. That should keep the rust at bay for a few years. I´d already cleaned and repainted the rest of the rear axle so i polybushed the trailing arms and filled them with wax too... and then dropped the axle back into place. Normally they put up a bit of a fight when you´re using new bushes but it went in with no hassle so chuffed with that. You might have noticed the new brake cylinders in that last pic. What i didn´t know was that the estates have larger cylinders than the saloons, luckily i noticed in time. However i did waste some time cleaning up the original saloon rear springs ready for some paint. What you might not see in that last pic is that the estates have larger springs too (they´re 2mm thicker) so i spent another couple of hours cleaning up the proper springs and have given them a coat of paint. Normally i wouldn´t bother but i´ll be going through the TÜV at normal ride height (with original wheels and tyres) and will "adjust" the ride height afterwards ..oh and i mustn´t forget to fill up the diff oil next time i´m underneath on all fours Please forget the datestamp on the pics they´re from today, it´s a new camera and i haven´t found where change the date yet Cheers, Dave

I haven´t even driven it yet guys so can´t think about selling it just yet. Update 18.07 I didn´t get as much done today as i´d planned but the rear ARB and the shocks are back in place. The propshaft wasn´t looking too healthy so i baremetalled it and gave it a coat af satin black to match the rest and here´s the reason i lost a couple of hours this afternoon. Christians 72 Taunus needed taking down to the local paintshop to get a quote for the respray. Not long now and there´ll be two V6 Taunuses parked up at Oldbus Garages

I don't know who was responsible for the styling on these Cortinas back in the day but if they're still alive they need to see this. It looks flippin ace! Cheers mate, getting there slowly. Update 21.07 with the temperatures still up in the high thirties i´ve repainted the drivers door on the inside and the sill. The side trim cleaned up nicely so that´s been glued back into place..... Slowly i need to start thinking about which wheels to get. Starmags always look good on a Cortina These 16`s BBS (7,5 & 9J) do look the part but i think 16´s will be a bit too big I took this pic at the Gathering a couple of years ago, very nice. In fact this photo motivated me to get myself a Cortina Estate I could get these on ebay but ET 40 (7x15) probably wouldn´t work I borrowed these off our Christians Sierra (7x15 ET23) I know the ride height needs to come down a bit but i think they´ll do nicely, maybe in a different colour though. What do you guys think? What´s the best wheel for a MK5 Cortina estate? Which ET do i need? Cheers, Dave

The 15x7's you've posted. With the plethora of cheap BBS reps available now you should be able to pick up a set for not a lot.

cracking finish emerging on this !
boring tech question. fair weather, low humidity, good for "outdoor" painting, have you had any issues with flies and stuff going "oooooooOOO SHINEY" and sticking in your top coat ?

If it was a MK 3 i´d agree, infact there´s a set going cheap on ebay locally but i the car is too "new" to put Wolfies on it. The 15x7's you've posted. With the plethora of cheap BBS reps available now you should be able to pick up a set for not a lot. Tom That´s my favourite option at the moment Tom. I´ve found these (15 x 7 ET25) on ebay but the seller reckons they won´t fit a Cortina because they´re too wide. Not sure about that, i can see an 8j being too big up front but a 7j should be alright. in my head i see this on starmag 2's with the centres painted black. I prefer the original Starmags although the dish on the Starmags 2 could look quite good. 13x8 RS 4 spokes from Midland Wheel I do like the RS 4 spoke, however i think they look better on a Capri or an Escort. Wenn i see a Cortina on RS 4 Spokes i always think the owner couldn´t be bothered to go out and find something different. Looking at this pic: I suggest a set of citroen (=4x108 if that´s the case on that taunus) 16" steelies in black with such shiny trim rings. I´m not sure that the Citroen steelies would look good mate, it´s definately going to be an alloy wheel. Just not too sure which one at the moment Thanks for all your ideas guys, i´ve still not made up my mind. I know what´ll look good i´d just not sure whether they´ll fit properly or not. I´ve got a set of 14 inch Turbovecs hidden away in the shed... ....the problem is they have a PCD of 5 x 120 ish. Does anyone know a company that could weld up the holes and redrill them to 4 x 108? I think they´d look brilliant on the Estate. cracking finish emerging on this ! boring tech question. fair weather, low humidity, good for "outdoor" painting, have you had any issues with flies and stuff going "oooooooOOO SHINEY" and sticking in your top coat ? As long as they stick in the top coat you´re alright mate, you can polish them out. The problems start when they attack your fresh paint job when you´re doing the first coat. You´ll alway get some dirt or flies and stuff when you paint at home. When i´m painting larger areas i clear out the carport, cover the walls with plastic sheeting and wet the floor to minimize the problem. The most important thing is i don´t do metallic paint and make sure you put enough coats on so that you´ve got a bit of leeway when you start wet sanding it back. Update 23.07 Talking of wetting floors and spraying cars at home....... ....paintwise all i need to do now to finish it off is to respray the engine bay. I dug out the new rear bumper yesterday and covered it in wax before i refitted it. You can´t tell on that pic but even though it was brand new i gave it a new coat of satin black to make sure it matched the rest of the car. Sorry for hiding it all in msking tape but it definately looks the part and i want it to stay that way during the build. Cheers, Dave

I ran 195/60/15's on 7 inch Dotz Mugello's on the Legerra for a while. 27mm spacing required to clear the chassis rails which are in the same place as ford escort and cortina inner arches in relation to the hub face of the back axle. This produced the odd side effect of making my capri speedo match my GPS and GPS speedo app on my phone exactly (unlike the 205/60/13's they replaced) They wouldn't suit the 'tina as they have naff all dish. There are a couple of sets of alloys on ebay which might work but they are in the UK... 15" ZCW R5 Gun Metal Grey alloy wheels 4x100/4x108EXIP ALLOY WHEELS 4x108 BBS look a like
