That rear quarter looks great even if you haven't finished it yet. I've got a 940 estate which is my spare's car/parts store and seeing what you have done is giving me ideas !
Just reading your bit about lead filling, did you sand it or did you use a body file or similar to shape it ? I got told not to sand it as the lead dust doesn't do you much good if you breathe it in, not a problem if you are wearing a mask though.

Hi Everyone Just joined and I am really pleased to be here in such good company! I have just bought a 1965 Ford Taunus Transit FK1250 and I am just going through the registration process. I have read Dave 'Oldbus' and 'Grizz' Taunus Transit threads and really enjoyed reading them all. My plan is to get to know the bus well and look after it as best as I can as all you guys do and help anyone when I can. Best, Jim

That looks fantastic! I especially like the C pillar - IMO it really finishes the shape off and makes it look 'factory'. I've got a soft spot for the Cortina, seeing as I own the Mk6 version ;-)
Hats off to you for your work rate too...

Sometimes, others may not understand why you like a car so much. Sometimes, you may not even understand why you like a car so much. But none of that matters; all that matters is that you like the car, and having it makes you happy.

There is someone local seems to run a lot of older fords about on trade plates, might be them - if it's in trade it wouldn't be taxed or sornd

Ah right, thanks for the info. I had heard of lead loading before but never seen it done. Cheers steve. Hi Steve, i lead loaded the C pillar the other day and took a few more photos this time so you can see how it works. You need to clean off the metal properly as the lead won´t stick to rust or paint. Then you apply the solder paste to the bit where the lead is going.... In the old days there used to be acid in it and if you wern´t careful the bodywork would rust underneath the filler and paint. These days though it´s acid free though.... Using a small propane gaslamp you then warm it all up a bit and then wipe off the top layer using a clean rag which leaves a thin layer of lead solder hopefully stuck to the metal....... ..after that you warm it all up again and melt the lead stick onto the bodywork or in my case half of it ends up on the floor If you then carefully warm it up again you can shape it with a wooden spatula...... Theoretically you should then spend days filing it back into shape by hand but i wear my sprayers mask and grind it roughly into shape with an angle grinder and the fine sand it into form. Which leaves you with it looking like this... The experts wouldn´t need any filler after that, but i´m not, so i do and after a light skim of filler i sanded it back and checked to see if the window still fits. .....it does so that´ll do me. Hi Everyone Just joined and I am really pleased to be here in such good company! I have just bought a 1965 Ford Taunus Transit FK1250 and I am just going through the registration process. Welcome on board, Bus Stop! ... you are in good company here and I don´t think oldbus minds your "thread hijacking". certainly not, especially with a old Ford. That looks fantastic! I especially like the C pillar - IMO it really finishes the shape off and makes it look 'factory'. I've got a soft spot for the Cortina, seeing as I own the Mk6 version ;-) Hats off to you for your work rate too... Cheers mate, i agree with you on the C pillar, it looks a lot better in real life than i imagined. All i need to donow is copy and paste for the other side. Well mine definately won´t be up in Marks´ league but hopefully i can park up next to it sometime in the near future and not embaress myself too much Dave your one is coming along very well mate I look forward to see it some time . sadly don't have it any more and it has a very different look now the Person who had it after me had it changed to his style then outed it and its not been seen since I´d forgotten you´d sold it Mark, it´s definately seen a lot of changes over the years. What's going to happen to the Granada? Will that end up as a 2 door as well after its donated? To be honest mate i haven´t got any plans for it at the moment. We´ve got a lot going on at the moment so wo´nt have time for any silly ideas but it´s going nowhere so we´ll see what happens eh. I´ve been spending some time sanding the rear side panel. This is a photo of the first layer of spray filler. ...i´ll spare you the pics of the second and third layers and to cut a long story short it´s getting there slowly... Cheers, Dave

Good guide on lead filling. I wasn't really sure about using it for some things due to the worries of the solder paste causing rust. I didn't know it was safe now ! My Dad showed me how to use the stuff years ago but he learn't back in the 50's.

Not that I'm trying to be negative, but is that a bit of a dip above the filler, or is that just the light?
It does indeed look factory!

Nice thing about the lead is that you are far less likely to get cracking across a panel join too. Look at most cheap beetles with an older restoration and you'll see an angled line across the rear quarter panel - I always lead load this bit and then give it a tiny skim of bondo for finishing and it's stopped any cracking at all.
