I thought I'd post my latest Mercedes purchase - a rather nice 190E 2.6 auto, with 77k miles. It's in wonderful condition, and it has the 6 cylinder engine, green velour interior, and smoke silver paint. I had been thinking about a 190 for a while, and this early-ish 190 with wonderful history caught my eye, so I enquired and collected it last week. The car isn't perfect, but the drive, body, and interior are a real timewarp experience. Everything works (bar the speedo and cruise control). I detect mild creaking from one side on the rear so it will be getting new ball joints soon. New mats are also on order. One of the rear mudflaps apparently declared independence a few weeks ago, so I have one in the boot and should probably find another at some point. I will probably drive it for a few weeks to understand what needs doing before doing anything. The history is fantastic with the original bill of sale and the PDI, as well as letters between previous owners and a record of all work done. All in all it's a really charming old car. I also own a w124 300e and an r129 500sl, both 1991 models. I'm not quite sure how that happened!

Very nice! My 2.3-16 is smoke silver.
My '89 2.6 was a blast when we had it, but that one was 199 Blauschwarz. Always wondered what happened to it...
I love the pre-cladding/pre-faclift look on the W201s as well. With the exception of the 16 valve variants and any AMG/Carat/Zender/Shulz kitted car, the lower cladding of the post-facelift (like my '89) made the lower end of the car look a bit bloated.
Nice score, and looking forward to seeing what plans (if any) you might have!

My plans are simply to keep it nice and standard. It's a really nice car and a great example of an early 190. It really does drive fantastically well.

Nice looking machine and quite a collection of youngtimers you have there. Have to admit I lurk the odd time on Pistonheads and have seen your posts on the W124. Ive had three 190s in the past and they are fantastic cars. I wouldnt mind another one but I find the space a bit tight to get in and out of the driver's seat with the space between the steering wheel and seat. Always fancied a pre facelift cars without the cladding but they're getting rare. Best of luck.

Good to hear! I really need to start a thread on my 2.3-16, but it's nothing special.
Hoping to score a 2.5 190D (non-turbo) with a manual at some point.
I would also love to bring home a 2.5-16 from my native Germany, but that's way down the road.

I had a w201 5 pot manual diesel for 5 or 6 years, I've since had various Audis, BMW's and Mercedes, I'm currently running a C270 CDI and the 190D is the best car I have ever and possibly will ever own.

That's interesting - I find getting in and out a little tight compared to my other cars (did they need to make the steering wheel so big!) but once in I'm fine. The 190 was clearly built to a budget (albeit a high one) in a way that the w124 wasn't, but it's still a great car. What engines did you have in your 190s?

I'll see if I can get around to it! I've owned and driven all factory engine options with the exception of the 2.5-16. My family has owned several 1.8s carbureted and injected, two 2.0s, one 2.3, one 2.6 and I've driven the non-turbo 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and turbo 2.5 diesels. I have to say that the 2.3-16 is by far my favorite! My 2.6 was a strong runner, but I love the sound of my 16 valve at what. Hands down my favorite MB chassis, next to the 123, but I grew up with both of them so I'm super biased, hah.

After that was a 1.8 injection and then a 2.0 injection. I didn't have the last one too long as I fancied a rally car at the time but ended up with a Saab 96. I'll dig some photos out if you don't mind the thread hijack.

Very nice find! A velours interior on the W201 is unbelievably rare, never mind a green one. Wow...

Very nice find! A velours interior on the W201 is unbelievably rare, never mind a green one. Wow... Thankyou! And Thankyou everyone for the pleasant comments. After using the car as my daily for over a week and 750 miles it needs ball joints (I diagnosed this when I first drove it but they were quiet in the first 500 miles and now are noisy - I had this with my w124 so no more miles until they are done), the speedo fixing and that's about it. It's a really charming old thing, and after thinking the 2.6 engine wasn't really up to the 300e's unit I now realise how smooth and sweet it is.

That's 190Rev talk right there! I don't mind modified cars at all, and so many of the retro cars here look fantastic. But an original survivor like this little 190 needs to be preserved! It's such a contrast to large modern cars that are big, generic, and ashamed of their engine. This feels like a small 80s quality 4 door with a smooth straight 6 turbine under the bonnet.
