EQUIPMENT
Chrome window trim, opening quarter lights, chrome bumpers, bezel vents, chrome driver’s door mirror, chrome waist strip, chrome bonnet line, VW bonnet emblem, running boards, horn bar with Wolfsburg crest, interior light, assist straps, ashtray, headlight flasher, glove box, door pockets, twin sun visors, grab handle. Optional extras; Seat belts, push button radio.
EXTERIOR
This wonderful Beetle catches the attention immediately with its irresistible charm and huge fashionista following. Finished in Volkswagen Gulf Blue (code L390), the paintwork boasts a pleasing uniform finish and all panels have a deep shine. Minor paintwork imperfections are detectable to the sharp eye but certainly do not spoil the cars appeal. Structurally excellent, this Beetle has been preserved and is ready for summer outings and shows. The chrome sections are fully intact but show minor pitting. Correct features identified for a ’61 model year example include the older style push button door handles, narrow light housing above the rear number plate, red turn signals to the rear lamps and slant headlamps. The epitome of cool retro and ready for much beach front admiration!
INTERIOR
The Ivory leatherette upholstery to the original seats is spotlessly clean and the common trend for major interior modification has been thankfully avoided. The material to the driver’s seat base has stretched slightly, and fitments such as the grab handle and original steering wheel with horn bar and Wolfsburg crest shows an aged related marks. The door cards and headlining are excellent. All interior catches and controls are correct and operate well, although the original and optional push button radio is not connected. A minor suggestion of slight 61/62 model year crossover is suggested with the fitment of a mechanical fuel gauge, an upgrade introduced for the ’62 model year. A genuine unmolested interior, everything that made this car a true motoring icon.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The air-cooled rear mounted engine with correct electric automatic choke is housed in a clean engine bay with some trim enhancements for extra bling. The engine number prefix AD denotes a 1600cc unit with the addition of twin Empi 40 HPMX carburettors and Bugpack breather box, whilst the unmistakable VW Beetle engine note is emphasised with a sensible exhaust upgrade. The 4-speed gearbox synchronized on all forward gears operates perfectly offering light and precise progression throughout the range.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
A set of Empi Speedwell BRM wheels have been fitted and remain in virtually perfect condition. Quality branded tyres of size 135 R15 and 165 SR15 front and rear respectively have plenty of tread remaining. The original spare wheel is housed in a structurally solid under bonnet wheel well. A professionally lowered suspension set up along with the upgrade wheels create the ultimate California ‘Cal Look’. The hydraulic circuit braking system offers modest stopping power with firm pedal action a necessity, exactly as they were made!
HISTORY FILE
This 1962 registered Beetle was built in July 1961 in Germany and arrived in the UK in 2008 after a long period in Sweden. The history file contains the original Volkswagen handbook and some previous MOT certificates since its arrival in the UK along with a service invoice with only around 100 miles covered since. There is substandial documentation from the vehicles period in Sweden in the form of the Swedish MOT equilvalent, the Besiktningsresultat or ‘Inspection Results’ with several certificates dating back to the late 1980’s.
Representing a mechanically superb and very well cared for example, this Beetle is wanting for nothing and is absolutely ready for the hugely popular classic VW scene. A joy to drive and look at, and perfect for those young or young at heart!
