I'm a Planet Rock listener, especially now I've got a DAB radio in the truck,
I've been hearing an ad for a well-known American owned car manufacturer which claims their small car will leave me breathless. Now whilst I may be in need of oxygen for a few cars, this isn't one of them - until I heard the last bit of the ad.
Mileage of 20,000 over 4 years, and excess miles charged at nearly 7p a mile! Now 20k I would do in about 9 months. Ok I'll go with this, it will leave me breathless, either not being able to use a car I'm paying for over the last three and a bit years of my lease, or the extortionate charge for doing my usual mileage!
Think !'ll stick to the 1983 RRC then!

I've noticed that a lot of car manufacturers are advertising cars on HP terms, at least that's what you think until you read the small print & find out it's a long-term lease where you have to hand the car back after 3 or 4 years having paid for it.
There must be a lot of stupid people out there!

With a lease or PCP deal basically you pay for the depreciation. Most new cars are sold this way because it makes it more affordable each month.
Manufacturers always choose 5K per annum for the adverts as it means the car is worth more after the term ends so the monthly cost is lower. It doesn't make all that much difference.
For people who can't or don't want to work on their own cars and are happy to pay a little for the knowledge that their car will cost X per month no matter what, a new car on PCP can make sense. Sure you can buy an old snotter for £300 and maintain it on a shoestring budget, but if you're someone like me who needs a reliable car that will absolutely get me to work and back (and has a courtesy car when it's in for a service) then it's worth paying the extra.
What I don't agree with are these "£149 per month" leases that have a £5000 initial fee! Mental.
Anyway, when I added up what I'd spent on my old Ibiza Cupra over 18 months of ownership, it worked out at nearly £180 a month. I was fed up of having to arrange lifts here and there and stuff when it needed to go into the garage (I've nowhere to work on a car myself). I figured I could have a nice new car for that, that someone else would have to fix and I could drive their courtesy car while they did it!
So now I've got a new Abarth 595 and it's awesome. Soon, when we move house to somewhere with a drive/garage, I'll buy myself something interesting and old and use my tinkering time and mojo for something fun, rather than just keeping my daily driver going. I'm totally through with rushing round in the girlfriends car trying to find a motor factors open on a sunday morning to try and find a part to get my daily moving again so I can get to work on Monday.

Agreed. We have a new car every few years on the 'buy it outright, hand it over and walkaway/drive another new one out scheme. Its convenient, modern cars are, generally, more reliable, economical and better to drive than old ones. Before the shock horror exclamations, I adore old cars and modified cars ( its why I'm here ) but I'm not daft enough to think that using one as a daily will be necessarily a wise move. Those classics of today ive owned when they were £200 poglers and I'm too old to start faffing about with them just trying to keep them on the road on a daily basis. I appreciate modern cars, the warm, comfortable cars that stick like s**t to a blanket even on wet roads and can go from 70 to 0 MPH quicker than my Firebird can go from 50 to 0 MPH. It also makes me appreciate the driving of my old stuff even more, that buzz of getting behind the wheel of your old car for the hell of it not because you have to. The car remains a hobby and a load of fun and not a tool to do a job to get you from A to B. Hey, we can afford a new car every few years so what the hell, you cannot take your money with you.
Don't knock it.

When I bought my BMW, one of the options given to me was paying over quarter of the price of the car, then pay £319 a month, be restricted to 8000 miles a year, then after 3 years I can hand it back and get another one, sod that. I ended up buying the car, using it for a short while, and then selling it as the ride was so bad it felt like I was driving the panda again

Conversely I think it's crazy to do this and a massive waste of money. I have an integra type r, use it daily and it's always been reliable. More reliable than new cars I've come across. Doesn't insist on being serviced by the main dealer, no monthly payments or limited miles, only costs are consumables which apply to any car. New or old, some cars are reliable and some are notoriously unreliable. Get a reliable car to start with and make it your daily. That's how I see it anyway. When I come to sell my integra I could probably get more for it than I paid. And I trust it will work as much as any new car. Plus it will go round corners faster

I did! Seriously, I drive for a living, cars, trucks, buses, you name it, if its got wheels I've probably been a steering wheel attendant in it at some point (even a tube train at one point, but we'd better not go there!)

I've just bought a CLK (with some help from the bank) and it costs me just as much a month as a brand new Toyota Aygo. I know which one I'd rather be blatting up the motorway in!
I've only had it a week and I've already done 1000 miles aswell!
