Hi guys, It's been a while since I've put a readers rides thread up, or even updated one, so thought I'd stick one up for the daily. I brought/did a deal for this in January '16 from a member on here. I was in need of an estate for work purposes and I love Saabs. It was a lovely runner and had just had a new turbo installed by the previous owner. Going from an early 1.6 zetec Focus to this was a major jump in power which was great... for a few weeks. More power was needed! I have the Saab a check over for the sludgy sump which is a problem for these engines. This was all in good condition, thankfully! To make sure I wouldn't have the problem I treated the Saab to an uprated PCV kit to eradicate future problems, new oil filter and genuine Saab oil. With this done I booked myself in with Noobtune, aka. Karl on the UKSaab forum for a remap Karl worked his magic on the Saab and it completely changed the 150bhp standard engine upto the current 225bhp! Was a lot of fun coming back on the M42! To make sure everything was in order I changed all the hoses to silicone ones and added a boost gauge to the grille for the centre speaker on the dashtop. The performance didn't last long however... This was traced back to a dodgy DI cassette, so a new one was ordered with the correct sparkplugs. Performance was back Next was the Autogauge boost gauge. I didn't realise when ordering that there was a problem with cheap materials in Autogauge's which meant the needle would drop. That was fixed by the classic TIM gauge. During the summer we took a trip upto Loch Lomond via. Windermere. We had a great time in Windermere but as we were heading north on a country lane I hit a pothole just over the brow of a hill and it wiped out the front and rear drivers side tyres ripping them half way around Que a call to the AA to come and help with a low jack and a spare space saver. We limped to a near by garage and I had a set of four decent tyres put on as the current ones were all the same ages and weren't looking so clever. As the months went on, I noticed the power was lacking more and more as the weeks went on. I checked the silicone pipes, no problems there. DI cassette was still okay. Tried a few other things and the last thing I could think of was the blow off valve. Sometimes oil from a knackered turbo can be pulled through and gum up the BOV. Changed it out for a billet MapTun performance one to no avail It's driving me mad as I want to start heading towards a stage three setup for the car but I want to get this problem nailed first. Since I'm coming up to MOT time I thought I'd get the oil changed, a new RamAir cone filter fitted (the original box was removed and a cone added) and the fuel filter changed. MOT came back as after the handbrake was adjusted and new sidelight bulbs were added But, the performance was better than ever!!! It was a combination of the air filter being covered in curse word and of dodgy quality and the fuel filter being the original with 135k on the clock. The car was treated to some new pressed metal numberplates and some surrounds as I was rather happy now. It's the wrong time of year to be adding the performance parts in my opinion at the minute as in the slightest bit of damp it'll wheelspin upto fourth, so I've started getting the parts together. So far I've got some Aero 'red' injectors to change out the 'green' airated injectors currently fitted and I've got an Aero turbo recently from Compass on here with all of the lines and parts needed Next on the list was a do80 intercooler kit and a 3" downpipe. But a new problem as arisen that the clutch has started slipping when the turbo kicks in when you are spiritedly driving I guess it would need doing at some point anyway... so that's coming very soon.

Good to see a 9-5 on here. Had a full fat Aero Estate with a auto box. Lovely cars. Mine got swapped with a mate for his 9-3 turbo convertible. Wife still hasn't forgiven me. Good luck with yours.

Same here - 2003 Aero Turbo estate stage 3. Love the thing, probably one of the cheapest ways to get around 300bhp and oodles of torque.

Had an 04 2.0t Estate with the 5speed auto and tiptronic a couple of years ago - regretted selling it about a month after it had gone. Should have had it Noob'd instead.

Looking good. I always thought they got the earlier 9-5 estates with those wheels just right, visually. And of course the power is so easily attainable too. Great to see another Saab on here.

Got to love these Saabs. My sister has joined in and got a Saab 9-3 as a daily, again with 150BHP. You do wonder how Saab got so little power from a 2.0 turbo! However, when I checked the boost on her car I think hers made 5PSI according to the Torque app. Is yours really making 23PSI? It seems like a lot more PSI! I'd have expected 17 or 18PSI tops for the power!

Cheers for the comments guys I jumped in the car today for work, which I haven't done for a few days, and I've got the engine warning light on *rolleyes*. Reading the diagnostic that comes build in via the ECU being opened up it seems to be the coolant sensor. Need to look further into this and the thermostat as I think it's still the original. Heating the car up is a slow process. However, when I checked the boost on her car I think hers made 5PSI according to the Torque app. Is yours really making 23PSI? It seems like a lot more PSI! I'd have expected 17 or 18PSI tops for the power! The 5PSI sounds about right as standard. IIRC the PSI with the stage one map I have should be approx. 21PSI but should ideally not be any more than that as it can cause the intercooler to blow. I'm putting the 23ish PSI down to the fairly new, pretty well build it seems, Chinese turbo and where the actuator has been set by the previous owner. It's amazing how de-tuned the Saab's and Volvo's are from the factory. I'm looking for just over 300bhp for mine because that's what the standard internals can take, IIRC. More than that and it's time to start stripping the engine and upgrading the internals. If your sister does fancy some more horses, I thoroughly recommend Karl at www.noobtune.co.uk. It's bizarrely increased the MPG as well because it's now designed to run on 98ron fuel so get's the most out of it, even with the loud pedal used more

Small update. About a week ago the clutch got to the stage where it'd start slipping as soon as the turbo started to kick in, so organise with the garage to swap the clutch and slave cylinder out for an uprated Aero version courtesy of NeoBrothers who have confirmed it is adequate for the power hike coming soon.
Β£240 for the clutch and slave cylinder and I was quoted Β£300 for the labour. This was severely underestimated by the garage though! In hindsight the garage should have charge be Β£800 odd! I never bothered looking what was involved, and neither did the garage. It turns out that you have to make most of the engine bay apart to take the subframe out just to get to the gearbox, and then that's an ordeal to remove! The garage man was not very happy and his staff have turned suicidal now! I paid up and brought some beer in as well because I felt guilty.
As it's snowing at the minute I haven't tested it out fully, so will have to wait and see what it's like now.
The interior heater motor has become extremely temperamental now and for the most part refuses to work, which is a joy at this time of year! I'm borrowing my brothers '53 Mondeo at the minute. It doesn't have the fun factor of the Saab, but the heater and heated screen is bliss!

sounds much like the 9-3, yes the subframe has to come off but its really not that bad a job on a 2 poster and with an assistant, I certainly wouldn't charge nigh on the value of the car just to change the clutch!

Your's looks nicer than mine! I only bought mine a month ago. I've already replaced the coil pack and now the crank sensor has gone so it won't run if it rains. It's sorn'd on the drive until I can get around to sorting it. Which is a shame as it is a wonderful car to drive.

Make sure when you do the crank sensor you get the old O-ring out of the hole. I found eurocarparts cheapest for a Lucas coil, especially if you land when they've got a 30% sale on, I think I paid Β£180 for mine.

Love this! My mate has an '04 plate Aero hot estate, his second Saab after a '54 plate saloon. The saloon is in our lockup, another 2.3 aero hot high pressure turbo. I think he was going to strip it as spares so if there is anything you want give me a shout There was nothing wrong with it except an estate came up locally!

Small update. There were some dead areas on the SID, so I decided to tackle it using the guides off the UKSaab forum. Take one knackered SID Now take it apart Realise someone at some point has done an awful job of trying to repair it so buy a second hand one off eBay *rolleyes* ...and install Perfect. A while ago I started painting the engine bay to break up the blackness of it. So far it's just the Saab wording but more will be coming. if there is anything you want give me a shout Sorry matey, I've only just seen this. I don't suppose your man is still breaking it is he?

Your in luck, its still sat in our lockup and as far as I'm aware the only things removed are the exhaust and one of the engine mounts.
What are you after? It has pretty much every option too, electric heated leather, heated rear even. touchscreen tv/media Saab headunit, 17" Aero hot wheels etc.

An update! and quite a large update at that! It was inevitable I suppose but the turbo spectacularly shat itself! I had the Saab stored up at my parents for a while, while I was pottering round in my brothers Mondeo quite happily. I helped out my ex-partners brother by purchasing his car off him (Mk1 Focus) as it was getting scrapped the next day. Wish I hadn't! The bloody thing was cursed! The Focus was a nail and refused to fire up or hold onto the battery charge. The same day the Mondeo decided it much preferred boiled steering fluid. So I took it back to my parents and exchanged it for the Saab, which then let go the next day! Three cars within two days! The Focus went straight to the scrap yard after that! Anyway, onto the Saab. There was a very strange whistle coming when it was on boost so I decided to get it checked out after I couldn't find anything wrong with the pipework. Phoned my regular garage who said "Come back on Wednesday" (five days away!) so I decided to give West Midlands Saabs (WMSS) a go as I was recommended them by someone local with the same model of 9-5. Extremely helpful on the phone and they said bring it straight over. The guy jumped in the car with the plan of taking it for a quick spin to see what the noise was like. Got onto the main road, put his foot down and it detonated! Absolutely covered the road leading in/out of the industrial estate with smoke! We limped it back and had a look. It had totally blown! Looks like the bearings have failed, not a surprise being a Chinese one *rolleyes*. Luckily, I had the TD04 turbo I previously brought so decided now was the time to start upgrading. It's looking a bit used, but is in good shape where it matters. First thing ordered was a do88 intercooler kit from PartsForSaabs. Pricey, but worth it I've been informed. They had the intercooler itself in stock but the silicone pipes were only available in blue, so I opted to wait a few days for the black ones to come in. So in todays post... A massive intercooler turned up! The second order was to a guy on UKSaabs by the name of Albert666 who makes custom downpipes. I'm lead to believe that you can use the off the shelf jobbies from PfS, even though they say it won't fit a pre2002 (you can if it's a manual apparently) but after the positive reviews from the UKSaab crowd I decided I'd have one of his. Downside is it's a 4-6 week lead time. In the meantime, the WMSS received the turbo and intercooler kit today and are going to start work on fitting them, dropping the sump again (they always do for peace of mind sake, which I like), getting some snapped stubs from the manifold and changing the original green injectors over for the Aero red ones. The downpipe and 3.5bar fuel regulator (to be ordered) will be fitted when the downpipe turns up and then it'll be back to Karl (Saabnoob) for the new map As the Saab will be out of action for a while, I needed a car. 14hrs after the turbo let go I was the owner of this from user David on this very site
