Well today was spent walking around van dealers looking for a new van for the business. After looking at the umpteenth Berlingo, Kangoo, and Combo, I realised something - if I'm going to spend my time driving around in something for work, why not get something I'm going to actually enjoy using. So can I see cool usable vans please

I still think the Daihatsu Extol and Suzuki Carry are the coolest modern vans. Both 1.3 twin cam petrol and RWD. They are brilliant fun to drive and both would look suitably cool modified! (fair enough thats an atrai7 but you get the idea) Or if you fancy something older obviously the 1.3 hijet would be just as fun!

Well the current van is a Combo, which has a very handy side loading door, but I'm looking for anything really. I've gone from looking at the vans above (Rascal based) to a mk3 Transit.
The van will be used for my plumbing and heating business.

Hello Mr Panda Selecta. I'm not always the best at replying to there but let's have a shot. I guess it depends on what you need to move and what you do for a trade as to how large you need it to be. I have had a few vans and trucks over the years but this is probably my favourite. It was a MK2 caddy van, TDI with the 1.9 VE engine. It used to happily sit at 70+ mph and used to return a minimum of 40mpg, sometimes up to 50mpg on a run. It was lowered with a flipped rear axle and it had adjustment plates in the rear. They're surprisingly spacious as well as I got a whole vr6 mk3 golf in the back of one once and an engine hoist. Behind this lot is a whole front end, engine, but and subframe. I just changed the height on the shackles according to the weight that was in the back. All of about 10 minutes to change. I sold this for a day van which I regret quite a lot in all honesty. This little van did everything I needed it to and never gave a whiff of trouble. I also used it every day with no troubles. I even had heated leathers in mine. It also used to give my friends mk3 8v a run for its money.

well gone are the days of fitting baths in the van, so at most its going to be a Combi boiler pack, a set of tools, and my gas testing gear. So I'm looking at a Caddy now

Ah nice!
I would advise that you avoid the SDI models, they're just a bit too gutless and slow.
A lot of Mk3 golf stuff is compatible with them, as is a lot of stuff out of the seat CĂłrdoba, and Ibiza. I actually bought a seat for a front end conversion which I think can look very good.
I can't remember what mileage my van was in when I bought it, but it was on about 235k when I sold it and it's still going now.
They do however suffer with some starting issues. It is purely down to a bad 109 fuel relay which is a common fault with this era VAG. ÂŁ15 odd quid solves the problem.
For mine with 12 months MOT I paid ÂŁ400. There is a caddy forum which has some decent vans on every now and again. Seat Inca is the same van.

This, if you want to do do the maximum pose & attract attention. Not sure you'd want to drive too far in it though ...........

I know headroom is an issue for you so I'm not going to suggest the coolest van in creation, the Mini van. I don't know if any of these would cut the mustard? Absolutely usable daily if it has all the upgrades; Hen's teeth; Hen's teethier; On ebay now; Escort RS2000 vanAs I said, I won't recommend a Mini van, I'm 6' and I can't fit in a classic mini to drive it comfortably so you've got no chance. I can't resist putting a photo on though, simplistic perfection!

don't forget the seat inca (stinca) van as a cheaper alternative to the caddy. Identical in almost every way.
I sold my rat gulf caddy van last year so I'm currently building up an inca now

Does it have to be a van or could you use a pick up? If so I will suggest what I suggest to everyone no matter what they are looking for! Cheverolet S10! Mine does everything I could ask for and more! Here is a photo of it looking dirty and battered in the snow, imagine what a good one would be like! IMG_1194 by Bowling Racecar Driver, on Flickr
