I almost suggested a mk4 Astra van. The 1.7izuzu is a good engine, seem to be unstoppable and they're also pretty good on fuel. Funily enough I was talking to a colleague about his old one less than an hour ago! There are plenty available and you can also add some cool bits, like the steering wheel controls are easily retro fitted. I used to have a nice set of heated leathers out of a Astra coupe in mine. 4x100 so plenty of wheel choice. Coilovers are cheap and GSI bits pop up occasionally. They seem to be a throw away car now so always tonnes in the scrap yards and parts are cheap and plentiful. B204 conversions are simple as well.

Any yank day van with a decent sized engine and an LPG conversion, although they look huge they're not actually if you physically compare dimensions to a modern executive saloon they're not really that big. Bonus points for not looking like a tradesmans van so less likely to get broken into. Blacked out windows are the norm so it doesn't look like you're hiding anything. Should be capable of about between 12 and 15mpg round town driven sensibly. All the plumbers merchants will know you after you've been in with it a few times. Rock n roll bed could come in handy if you get to site before anybody else.

There are two transits here in Ireland, a Mk1 and a Mk2, running the vauxhall/izuzu 1.7td And I know of 2 more that are basically smiley transits with mk2 cabs on. Useable but seriously stand out vans.

Chap used it as a decorating van and had just pulled the whole rear interior out of it.
