Hello everyone,
We seem to have ended up as custodians of this old van. It's been used by Mrs_pOG's father for the last year (we picked it up for him when his last van was misbehaving). Now that he's upgraded to a newer model, its come back to us.
Now we don't really need a van per se, but all attempts to sell it have been futile, so figured I might as well have a play with it, to keep my hand in so to speak.
Plans? Don't know really. I guess it will be wheels, 'stick' and see what happens after that.
Don't want to be spending fortunes on it, so a quick nose around eBay turned up likely candidates for the wheels side of things. Typical terrible listing, and one grainy distorted photo, meaning a bit of a gamble but that's half the fun.
Yeah, lets have a go and see what we get. Lucky dip etc. Obviously everyone else was put off by this and I wan with the opening bid.
Luckily, the chap was less distant than the advert implied and I had to go a whole 3 miles to collect my 'treasure'. Should have got some 'before' pictures, but these were literally the most filthy wheels I have ever seen. An hour and a half of scrubbing just to get them to the point where you could handle them without gloves. YUK.
Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but for 50 quid I reckon they're alright for now.
Wheels cleaned up, time for a trial fit. Wanted to put them on to see what needed to be done tyres-wise, and to ensure they didn't catch / foul anything.
Good. Straight on, nothing fouling, no need for spigots, spacer or any other guff.
Tyres are obviously a bit 'much', but as they're all knackered to various degrees they all want binning (or turning into plant pots) anyway. With the 205/50/16's the tread is slightly outside the bodywork, and the rolling radius is quite a bit different. I reckon that 175/50/16's will give a little bit of stretch to bring them inboard more than enough and should be near as dammit the same as the original rolling radius. A trip to the tyre shop beckons!
But not in the van, because like a great big stupid Hector, in all of this I managed to shear not one, but two of the wheel studs on one hub. GREAT. So now I also need to acquaint myself with an easy-out to get the remnants out of the hubs. What a load of arseache...
