Hi guys, thought I'd stick this up here and see who's feeling brave....
We've got a lovely E36 318iS which has sadly succumbed to the old tin worm. She's been off the road now for about four years, though has been regularly started and moved over that period. The biggest failure on the MOT was the jacking points....they've all collapsed! I made a start on this a couple of years ago, but life has got in the way and I simply don't have the time or energy to be undertaking this project.
I'll start with the good points; this was one of the last cars to come with the legendary M42 engine, and this is one of the reasons why I'm so loathed to allow the car to die. The 1.8 16v engines is one of the sweetest of all time, and still happily revs round to 7000rpm, sounding great while doing so. The chassis is really well set up too, and we've always had great fun driving round the country roads. It comes in the very rare Cordoba Red which still shines up pretty well, and all four wheels are in decent nick with good Nexen tyres on. I'd also installed various OEM+ items over the years, including OBC, remote locking with comfort close, front fog lights, and nearly managed to get ULF with MFSW to work!
And so to the bad bits; there is quite a lot of welding to be undertaken. I've cut back the rear jacking points, and even got as far as making up templates for the box-section that takes the rear jacking tubes. We also sourced some new sills, and have cut down sections to fit those bits I've cut out. The front points are more difficult to deal with, and I don't have any templates made up for them. We do however have sill sections, though they need a bit of fettling as they were from a saloon. The rest of the body does have bits of rust here and there, the rear arches are starting to show through again, and bits of the rear subframe ARE crusty, but kept getting through the MOT.
Other failure points at the time where that the front brakes were imbalanced, and the handbrake wasn't working on one side. Obviously given the time off the road, the brakes are pretty well seized, but a replacement pair of calipers were sourced and will come with the car. The exhaust has subsequently rotted, so that will need to be replaced from cat back.
I have stripped out the interior ready for welding, the carpet is safely stored away, and all the fixings etc are still in the car.
I appreciate this is a long shot, and requires someone who loves these cars as much as we do, but is also a competent welder which I am not!
Price is very much open to negotiation, I would just be happy to see the car getting a new lease of life, and getting back on the road again!
Thanks for looking
Andrew
