Entry #1Hi Hello. Writings not really my thing but this might be a bit of motivation get along with this project. This is my first yoke so as you can imagine I'm not in a position to spend too many benjamins on it. Its a 1968 Viva HB, 1.2 4 speed. So far I've converted it to Gaz adjustable coilovers in the front, put Corsa B adjustable springs and stiffer dampers in the rear and banded a set of 13" steelies. .....and basically I want to ruin it with a turbo Saab engine, sorry. I got an engine already but it needs rebuilt and I don't think its worth putting the money into, so I need another. I cant decide which gearbox and rear axle to go with. > A Manta or Carlton box would be handy but their not the strongest and rather rare. > An Omega box would take more yeehaa but has a hydraulic clutch setup and they're also big. > An RX8 box would be cool with all the extra gears and small form-factor but they're not very strong either. > A Manta 4HA axle would be nice and strong but it would need narrowed > An English axle would be even narrower than standard [wider wheels ]

Cool.
My first car was an HB - albeit a GT but 2.3 not 2.0. Something more than a stock 1.2 is needed - Saab turbo would be different.

HB is my favourite model of Viva, and that looks in fine shape, Loving the banded Steelies. Saab power has been done a few times and it works well and I'm sure that someone with knowledge of what cogbox and diff work will be along shortly.

Saab engine is from the same group, so it can't be that terrible That looks very nice, but I'm sure the 1.2 can leave you wanting!

Cheers dudes. I have another option which is a tuned ford crossflow that's sitting in the shed, but I think that's a bit sacrilegious...

Entry #2Hello again. Schools pretty much done for summer so I can start messing about with the Viva again. I'd still love to do the Saab thing but for now I'm gonna go with a nice simple Ford crossflow swap with a type 9. I got the type 9 cheap and my dad had the crossflow sitting in the garage, I think I can have it as long as I don't wreck it on him . I got the old 1.2 pulled out today and then it started raining and thus far hasn't stopped, I also got the new engine and gearbox temporarily mated, I'm waiting on a release bearing coming in the post. Here's some more photos but I forgot to take anything of the new motor... I found that steering wheel at a local jumble sale and got a boss from Merlin Motorsport. A 1800 / 2300 axle would be cool if i could get my hands on one as they should take more abuse. And then some sort of breaks upgrade for the front at least and to top it all off a nice set of classic bucket seats.

Oh that is brilliant. Crossflow should suit that spot on and I love the fat steelies. Crossflows used to find their way into Chevettes in the 80s for motorsport. Good to see another NI car on here. Ps saw a really nice HC Magnum the other night.

The wheels look absolutely spot on, are they twelve or thirteen inch ? There was an XE engined one at Popham car show last year that looked good. Love the interior as well, far more interesting than plain old black !

Thanks lads. The crossflow actually came from a Chevette, I believe it's got a high lift cam, high comp. pistons and whatnot, maybe even bored out and it's on twin 40 weber's.
The wheels are 13s. Originally 4.5J +2" band at the front and 2.5 for the rears.

Here is the one I spotted. I remember reading about a chevette with a crossflow in an old Fast Car Magazine and they didn't have much clearance between the carbs and servo. They ended up using a Lynx crossover manifold of some sort with a single carb. I guess it's similar for a lot of cars with crossflows, even Escorts has no room !

Oh boy she's clean. Yea a quick measurement earlier said it would be close but I think it'll work, might have to do something ugly with the trumpets in worst case scenario. There isn't really much similarity between these and Chevettes unfortunately, as in axles or engine mounts...

I think the type 9 will mean the gear lever is in the wrong place on a viva, which in one as clean as yours would be a shame as you have such a nice centre console. I'd be looking at a conversion using more up to date & compact drive trains if possible - MX5 perhaps, or possibly the 106 GTI engine / Suzuki gearbox conversion in the for sale section.
Whatever you do, make sure it's reversible, good luck and have fun with it

Oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Me likey!!!! What a lovely car you have sir. I really do like that colour combination - Oyster grey with Casino red interior. Mighty fine indeed. I'm not biased.... Plus you have an SL with its separate rear seats, fake wood trim, gear lever surround. Looks like someone has had the dash recovered too. Vey nice. Whilst my car was still in the UK I'd fitted an 1660 X flo with a sport cam into my HB after the original engine turned out to be clapped out. I fitted a brand new 23/36 Weber and decent Bestek electronic ignition. It went really well. Not a lot heavier than the original 1.2 so not affecting the handling. Probably about 90 bhp, very simple clean engine bay and returned an easy 35 mpg. With a DVG carb you'll have no worries about servo clearance. They keep tune, sound fine, are economical and don't lack that much in breathing compared to twin webers until you really start working the rest of the engine. I just got bored though and had a spare Rotary... I'd fit a x flo my HB wagon but decent xflo engines are getting expensive to find.

That red interior is too nice to spoil. I rather like the aftermarket steering wheel though.
