Laughed out loud at George’s wasp disposal methods as used a very similar version a few years back. We have a low wall that separates a patio area from the lawn. Very nice and sheltered and my preferred resting spot with a libation on a summers evening. One summers evening, pre libation, I noticed a few wasps moving in and out of said low wall. Being a ‘live and let live’ type of chap when it comes to nature let them get on with it whilst I enjoyed the end of the day. Unfortunately the wasps didn’t hold with my approach and decided that they wanted this part of the garden to themselves and went about persuading me to leave when a bunch of them crept up behind me and gave my ankles a good kicking. I “might have been a little ‘refreshed’ by this time so quickly retired to the shed to hatch my revenge on the hateful little thugs. ‘Mmmmmm.... fire will sort them out’ was my initial thought. And I was right. Unlike George I didn’t have any lighter fluid but I DID have a nearly empty bottle of Nitro fuel for my sons R/C off road racer. A quick rummage located some pipe which was attached to the litre bottle along with my faithful blowtorch. Sneaked back to the wall, located the hateful thugs point of entry inserted pipe and discharged a good portion of the nitro into the hole. Left it a few minutes to allow the nitro to propagate and then applied flame from blow torch and..... Nothing. plums. I know, probably need a little more nitro to move things along. Re inserted pipe in hole gave the bottle a good squeeze for luck and.... Might be worth pointing out for those that don’t know but nitro burns with a clear flame, so you know what is coming next don’t you... Bottle turned into a jet pack and shot off over the garden setting fire to Mrs. Y’s garden brolly whilst simultaneously leaving a burning arrow of grass pointing back to yours truly who was currently sitting on his backside after being knocked backwards by said jet pack.... Needless to say the wasps were never to be seen again, Mrs. Y became the proud owner of a much nicer garden furniture set and I am not allowed near accelerants after a beer. Looks like a lovely setting, what a great way to spend lockdown. P.

We have progress, and I can confirm old plumbing pipe work + a torn bartowel + some bottletops make comfortable extended bars. We are now out of lockdown and a local cycle shop reopened last week. I marked the occasion by a trip and bought some parts that will get used here then taken back to uk with me, and some tubes to replace the ones I adopted from next doors bike. Was the wait worth it, Oh yes!

I've never seen such a translator before. Is it better than google? I usually don’t trust Google translators and use manual translation services such as TheWordPoint, if interested, here is their overview pickwriters.com/reviews-of-services/thewordpoint. It is strange that this is the first time I have seen the site www.translate.com/, especially considering its address. It was logical to assume that it exists, but I never thought about it. Perhaps I will test it in the coming days.

My stay here keeps getting extended so I decided it was time to get transport sorted. The bike is now an E-bike and it being used as a proper workhorse Pic : E-bike 36v 350w conversion kit, moving 5ft striplights (cheap from the charity shop), flatpacked inflatable paddle board at the nearby beach, board at the pond behind the house I need to arrange a return trip to uk but every time I talk to folk there I decide to stay here I bit longer until it’s safe to travel. I may be here a while yet In other news I recently found out the owner of this place is T-total, which led to him saying I can help myself to help myself to the weird assortment of bottles in the liquor cabinet and wine cellar as he won't drink them SamplesChecking if the contents are safe to drink is my latest spare-time project, it may take some time

A colleague of mine here was due to head back to the UK in May. He delayed it until August. October now! I'm getting the feeling he doesn't really want to.

Well, due to circumstances beyond my control I can now get a flight to UK no quarantine needed. It looks like I quickly need to come up with a new excuse reason to stay here in paradise, or book a flight home before I miss the summer. Everyone I speak to in uk talks about rain every day, force 11 storms and more. Decisions

Flights to UK became non-quarantine-able for the first time less than 2 weeks ago. True to form - as soon as I paid for my flight the quarantine was reintroduced. Plan B: was to land and stay indoors for 14 days and ask some mates to bring a couple of crates of essential supplies around on Friday eve. That’s now also scuppered due to local lockdown so no mixing of households. Not the way I hoped my return to UK would go Now I have a leaving date I asked if there was any other odd jobs to do before I left. My 6th sense kicked in when I heard “If you have time could you just...” Experience says the word *just* is often a big red flag! Most of the parts I needed got sent from UK, the new projects should keep me busy for a while. The only thing missing are instructions on how everything fits together! Fun times. Tip for shipping big / odd / heavy stuff around the UK or to EU try www.speedshift.co.uk/ The good news is the crate included 2 tyres in go-faster dayglow green from brand “Curio” and they work very well Recycling done properly - junk is left alongside the large communal bins in the village for self serve wombling. Well it’s situation normal for me - every time I try to make plans life decides to move the goalposts. I’m still overseas and have been waiting for travel rules to ease up before I booked a flight back to the UK. Travel restrictions were relaxed last week so I started arranging my trip. A couple of days ago I got persuaded to extend my stay here - and have been promoted to General Manager of a newly created business. The newly created role includes my previous “General Dogsbody & everything else” duties but sounds better The oversized jigsaw I received a few months ago has been transformed into a very high tech domestic water UV purification system. Combined with the solar water heater that I refurbished soon after I got here, it gives unlimited boiling hot water that’s safe to drink, and very high pressure showers. The lessons learned were useful when a neighbour rang yesterday to ask "Do you how solar systems work - ours isn't getting hot". I went around earlier today and it was soon fixed, a couple of good results I found a spare sit-on mower in one of the sheds (as you do), neighbours who have lived here 20 years say they never knew about it so I'd guess it's been parked up since the 90's or earlier. A total rewire (to fix damage caused by rats) + a new battery (scavenged from the recycling pile at local electrical wholesaler), strip & rebuild the carb, refurb the drive & mower pulley systems, and it's alive and great fun I like to keep busy so have been doing a few small jobs, including fitting lowered false celings in several rooms (the original roof was shabby, dark, and very difficult to keep clean) The new ceiling is lower but makes the room feel a lot bigger as it's so light and fresh. Nice Due to my extended stay I will soon (reluctantly) be selling off some "stuff" I have in storage the UK, if anyone is looking for a joblot of Retro bikes PM me and we can maybe work something out forum.retro-rides.org/thread/125072/smaller-machinery-wheels-less-50cc My next problem is sorting long term transport here. I'm now using a late model clio (on loan from a neighbour when they aren't using it), I've been given the ok to use a Nissan 100 Targa that was abondoned here many years ago (I've got it running to near MOT standard but the paperwork & admin will be difficult to sort out), or maybe I need to buy a "fun" car - watch this space ps. If anyone in the UK wants a smart BMW E93 folding hardtop cabriolet let me know, mine is MOT's until the end of the year but it makes more sense to sell it than leave it parked up doing nothing, and getting it shipped (or driven) over here isn't an option. Edit: it's a while since I tried uploading photos from an iPhone, the new layout is causing me a lot of problems so I ended up posting the pictures then editing the post on a laptop so it made sense. Either I'm missing something obvious or older iPhones and this forum don't work well together any more Fun times

Good morning, good to hear from you again! That water system looks like it could be from here, a spaghetti-birds nest of pipes, filters and motors. Actually works well, when the water company deign to give us water, that is. I think your failed trips to the UK are trying to tell you something. Like, stay where you are! Keep up the good work, and the entertainment.

Thanks folks, there are things I need to sort out in the UK otherwise I'd be very happy to stay out here indefinitely Timing for a return UK trip isn't good as most UK jobs are on hold for obvious reasons. It's interesting to see so many comments saying "Stay where you are", it makes me a lot less keen to return to the UK. The chap who owns this place has asked if I can tidy it up while I'm here, as General Manager (title to be confirmed - business cards to follow) I have a lot of discretion* in how I do it so I'm considering asking around for a volunteer to help me with the gardening. Does anyone have any words of advice for recruiting volunteers for a work exchange? Any advice? Provisional advert (feedback welcome) : Would suit somebody physically and mentally healthy as some work will be physical, should have experience** of gardening and / or repairing garden walls, no payment but free accomodation in exchange for 4 x 5 hour days work each week. * This is another one of those "do what you want just make it better" type of jobs I love so much ! ** I'd like any volunteers to be experts but attitude and the ability to work without checking a mobile every 5 minutes is more important. In the worst case we can use Google.
