In the last three goes at seeing what we could find for our £1,500 on ebay in the 60s, 70s and 80s we've found some gems and a bunch of projects, of varying degrees of approachable. The 80's had the least amount of projects in it (unsurprisingly with increased galvanization and the cars being that bit younger), not it is time for the 90's I had high hopes of finding good usable cars, hopefully with some suitable retroness to them. I stopped at 95 as that is the cut off for Retro Rides Gathering (ish) and I wanted to see if you could join the fun at RRG17 for £1,500.
Let's start with a barge
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-xj6-x300-sovereign-4-0/152618443642
Lots of potential in these, and for £1,300 you could be driving to Shelsley Walsh in a great deal more comfort than I will be
An Escort, everyone loves escorts
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Escort-1991-5-door-1-4/222578295958
Oooodles of potential with this one, wheels, ride height, or go nuts with the motor, or all three.
Another bargeness here
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Carlton-CDX-2-6-Auto-Saloon/322578471404
Plenty of options here, VIP style it, or do some gearbox swapping around and make a drifter, or any one of a number of ways you can fiddle with these things. Or just drive it in comfort.
Talking of (relative) comfort
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mercedes-190e-1993-1-8-manual/263081378273
These things have so much potential too, lots of very cool ones out there to be inspired by. Looks to have been fixed up by current owner, so hopefully it is just a buy and drive affair.
Pre modded
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Escort-MK4-1-4CVH-1990/332292883716
Save yourself time and just buy something that comes with wheels and some other bits done to it already
Got a soft spot for these
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-126-650cc-Aircooled-LHD-1994-New-Mot-Please-read-not-fiat-Abarth-or-500/172767452493
LHD means it is maybe a bit of a lower price than a normal 126? These things are great fun
A Retro Rides Legend sells a car
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-Toyota-Celsior-V8-4-0-RWD-automatic-JDM-Lexus-LS400/182654409916
The magnificent Alistair K, aka AlistairK, aka Akku, is stell his Lexus, lovely chap, buy his car.
Always need a project that will probably sell for more than our budget to start with
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Celica-GT4-Turbo-Rally-Model/272755702072
Join Blown_Imp and have a bonkers over engineered slice of Japanese homologationness.
Finally a bit of Japanses Saloonness
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-Mitsubishi-Galant-GLSi-AUTOMATIC-CLASSIC-CAR-LOW-MILEAGE/263050752140
Looks super clean and (as ever) only wheels and lows away from being a real head turner.
I'm looking forward to revisiting the 60's with a £3k budget, but I'm pretty happy with how these £1.5k ones have gone. Some very cool stuff to be picked up if you keep you eyes out.
