Not sure if this is the right place to post or not, admin feel free to move it if not. I've recently bought a 3 phase hydravane 23 screw compressor and I'm looking at my options to run it as I haven't got 3 phase in the shed it's going into. I've enquired about rotary phase converters but they're a bit out of my budget for now. After looking on YouTube I've seen people using 220v to 400v digital inverters or variable frequency drives and they seem to be relatively cheap compared to the rotary units. The motor on the compressor is a 5.5kw unit. I know very little about this kind of thing so I'm just looking for some help/advice on my options. Thanks in advance

I had a 23cfm compressor custom built for me 2 years ago - due to the size of the pump it requires a 5.5Kw motor to drive it which is 3 phase - like you I am on single phase supply had an invertor added to the build - runs without an issue

Ok so I'll just need to find an electrician who'll be fit to wire an inverter for me.

Ok so I'll just need to find an electrician who'll be fit to wire an inverter for me. In a nutshell yes but if you can get hold of an electrician prior to purchasing your invertor he / she should be able to advise on best model / value for money option rather than purchase something before hand only to find out that it's of an unsuitable spec - post up pics on a thread once you get going with it - workshop installations of such kit are always a good source of info for other forum users whom aspire to such kit

5.5kW is pretty hefty but there's not much to fitting inverters, you just need to make sure it's rated high enough and has single phase input.

I have used this place several times, they are really nice people and cheap too www.newton-tesla.co.ukI did hear they buy all the old stock and sell it heavily discounted but still guaranteed. I am certain they would supply instructions too

It will come in handy even if you never use it

Can you give a rough guide to how much the inverter was - I am looking at a new spotwelder but the kit I want are all 3 phase - Thanks Chris

I think you might struggle to run a spot welder off an inverter like that, Chris. They make a pseudo-sine wave which is OK for driving a motor but I suspect you will struggle (if it works at all) on a spot welder which is , in effect, a chuffing big transformer.

@grumpynortherner it cost me €550 approx including customs charges

Knowing a bit about the way a spotwelder uses current I wouldnt consider attaching one to a VFD, or anything else full of electronics. I don't think it would be happy.

There goes that idea then - it would appear that the only single phase stuff in the market is what I already own - a very heavy all in one transformer & manual plier / pincer type - it's fine if you are just doing a couple of welds but if you are working around a panel such has a sill it's bl**dy hard work - taking into account the comments above that's why I can't find a single phase transformer stand alone unit with non transformer / lightweight pincer head then

Suspend it on a bungie rig to make it easier to handle?

Make your phase converter from a big 3 phase motor some capacitors, very easy to do & works a treat. My local scrap yard allways has new 3P motors in the motor bin.Made mine for about £40.
