my mum drove this.... I had one of those with the 2.5 CRD engine for a while. A few slightly irritating american car touches, but otherwise a really solid bus, which was nice and easy to work on, comfortable to be in, and not bad on fuel. It didn't look over bad either. I'd have another, but not so many around anymore, nice ones especially. see i think my mum had the petrol version.. i didnt mind the interior, but i thought/think it looks hideous! beauty in the eye eh lol :-) also, appaling in front immpacts!

I had a go in a V6 one once, and was quite impressed.
Fortunately front end impact performance never really presented itself as an issue.

My dad was a railroad man, he had only four cars: VW Typ 3 1500S, Opel Kadett B estate, that Audi and a Citroën BX. The Audi is the only one of them which I wouldn't want to own today. It was the only car he bought new, and he ordered it in miami blue. Never seen another in that colour - I didn't even find an image!

Had a lot of good ones; Sweeney style mk1 Granada V6, Daytona yellow mk3 ‘Tina as well as zephyrs and zodiacs. Some would say the marina and ital estates were dodgy as well as the diy mpv Sherpa van with windows and bus seats in it! I’d love any of them if they turned up for the right price!

I think the uglyest car Dad ever had was a early blue Austin allegro 1.3L blue Vinyl seats than got so hot in the sun I had to sit on a tea towel so my legs didnt get burnt! But mostly i think he had decent cars, he had these since ive been around and can remeber. vauxhall firenza 1.3S - he's never really forgiven me for having to get rid of this, my child seat wouldnt fit!, vauxhall 1800 magnum with a cammed 2300 engine in it, (regular shredder tyres apparently),MK4 cortina 2.0l Automatic Ghia, the comfyest light beige seats, fake wood dash, 70's russet brown with a beige vinyl roof (written off), Mk5 Cortina 2.0L Ghia (written off), Blue austin Allegro, Montgo 1.6HL Estate, Silver Granada Ghia (2.0 DOHC motor), now hes in to Freelanders. I think most people who grew up in the 70s and 80s have memories of burned legs from vinyl seats. I know I did. They were mostly brown too, to add insult to injury. We thought we'd hit the jackpot when Mum & dad got a car with fabric seats, until a bottle of milk got spilled and we never really got rid of the smell! That was a shockingly unreliable Talbot Alpine which overheated a lot (ironically the actual heater and rear window de-mister never worked) Eventually replaced with a medical appliance beige Lada Riva with, yes, brown vinyl seats! Definitely the ugliest of my parent's cars.

Suprised not to see more Japanese cars in this thread. Could be a generational thing? The Old Feller, having fought 1939-1945 refused to buy a German or Japanese vehicle. So he had a succession of Commer vans followed by three Vauxhall 101s, then he moved to Volvo estates. What I could never understand is that when he retired he moved to Renault. The reason for my lack of comprehension was that he actually liked Germans (wouldn't buy their cars, but loved holidays/food/people/beer there) but had a strong dislike of the French and refused to go anywhere near the country - but bought their cars. Nowt so queer as folk.

Not ugly but at the time super bland, dad once owned an early 2.0GL Sierra, with the early lights. Anyway, one afternoon while he was at work me and some friends replaced the rear wheels with what must have been about 345/60/13s, they stuck right out of the wheel arches by a good half a foot on either side. We left it parked on the drive for when he came home form work. As we waited he came up the drive, walked straight past it and inside, picked up the keys and announced he was out to pick up something or other. reversed the car out of the drive and laid two almighty black stripes down the road before tooling round the block, parking back up and calmly saying "put them back on lads" After his BL adventures my old man had the mushroom coloured one of these with a mid beige/ grey/ nappy brown/ whatever coloured interior. Twas a design marvel at the time with Ford providing literature on how you won't get the corners bashed off because they are er... rounded? Luckily he totalled it going up a flyover working nights in Barking whilst asleep although if he still had it he could command 5 figures for it and retire. Before that, he got a new Cortina Crusader in an equally disgusting two tone brown. I recall seeing it on a revolving turntable in Allens Romford showroom and also recall the 2 week argument he and my mum had when a mysterious gate hinge sized scrape appeared on the rear 1/4. In fairness though, the later '87ish sierra estate Ghia was a lovely car... that stereo amp thing they came with was cutting edge.

Yes indeed - my dad had for his first company car (which replaced the Renault 12) an A-reg 1984 Sierra in bright Sunburst Red, which seemed really advanced for its time, with the stereo speaker joystick control, seats with headrests, etc. The only thing he didn't like about it was the rather gutless 1.6-litre E-max engine, which was designed to run very lean.
Sadly, it got hit hard up the back while he was waiting at some traffic lights, and was never quite the same again when it returned from the bodyshop...
A DVLA check reveals it last ran out of tax in July 1998, so had a pretty good innings nevertheless.

DISCLAIMER: I wasn't in the least bit embarrassed by any of these motors! I've used this thread as an opportunity to reminisce! Cool thread idea 😎 Here're the interesting cars my mum owned when I was a kid: (Google pics - not actual cars!) Toyota Tercel 4wd: This was cool; had a little 'floating' gauge to tell you the current incline! Mum let me drive this around a field when I was about 10. Really liked this thing. Head gasket failure sent it to the breakers if I remember rightly. Morris Minor Nicknamed Gemima.. had a horrendously uncomfortable rear bench; it had some sort of bar underneath it. Fond memories though! Loved the raspy exhaust! Nissan Sunny: Used to like waxing this one, had nice deep brown paint! I remember knocking the handbrake off and moving it 10ft forwards and backwards everytime mum popped in the house to get something she had forgotten before a drive... Renault 4: Very cool old thing that sadly ended up upside down in our road; it hurt! I've got quite traumatic memories of it now i think of it! I remember cutting my head on a bit of rust on the inside, below the rear nearside window. I also remember 4 firemen lifting it up and moving it out the way.. Renault 4 #2 I think this came a while after the one that flipped. It was great, sadly written off by vandals 😢 My dad had a few interesting motors, too... I was brought home from the hospital in his mk1 Fiesta. I think this was the one and only brand new car he had. I've fond memories of looking through to the dash from the back seats at night. It was a cosy place to be. Bluebird Premium: Fairly posh at the time, but the pistons seized on the motorway! Had a go of 'fixing' it for him when i was about 11 but, unsurprisingly, wasn't successful. I remember puking in the back on the way to a cricket match on the hottest day of the year. Did it so quietly Dad and his mate didn't notice, so I didn't tell them. They found out 7 hours later on the way home.... ![](http://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/daveyboy20/27105d9b3fe9.jpg) Nissan Sunny Spat one of its gears out. Fiesta XR2 Probably my favourite of dad's cars. Sounded great, particularly the morning the entire exhaust feel off. It failed the mot on rust one year. Dad let me have it to mess with. It was cool, i can still remember the smell of the interior. Got up to a few things i probably (definately) shouldn't have with it. A neighbour ended up buying it from me a few years later. He gave me at least 4 polo mints during the conversation... Went past his house the other day and it's still there with about 6 others! I very much enjoyed that trip down memory lane, cheers!

once past the shame of the previously mentioned various daf's..(though the 8 tracks were cool & I would happily drive one today) the old b'stard redeemed himself slightly with a very early golf , a couple of sd1's and mini pick ups , a 1600st celica (choc brown/tan roof/wolfrace alloys...yum) , an early 99 turbo (oh that boost gauge...a 10 year olds wet dream), then a glut of dubs...passat , scirocco storms , gli cabo (still mine) , a couple of mk1 caddys etc etc (plus other random projects and tat in between!!!) basically , even yesterdays curse word is todays treasure but yesterdays decent ride is todays dream garage material!

From what I can remember my parents choice of cars wasn't particularly ugly, and asides one or two, weren't terrible.
At some point before I was born Dad had a Morris Traveller, which he sold when the wooden frame of the rear end rotted to the point it would lean out going round corners.
Mum had a Marine Blue SWB Series III Land Rover for a while until shortly after I was born.
After that they had a Volvo 240 apiece, whilst dad used to spend a bit of time riding round in my uncle's Spitfire which was stored in our garage for a while.
One of the Volvos went in favour of an early 2.25 diesel powered Land Rover 110 which stayed for a few years until it threw a rod and destroyed the block. The other Volvo was replaced with a Nissan 300C Saloon with the 3 litre V6, whilst the Land Rover was replaced with a Seat Marbella which I recall being a rather natty thing to sit in the back of.
The Seat eventually went in favour of a 4 door MK2 Golf which stayed with us when my parents split up.
Dad got rid of the Nissan in favour of a new Cinqecento (in 1995) which stayed for a few years and was replaced with another, before he and my now stepmother downsized to one car (she had a succession of 3 series BMW's before moving onto Audi A4's) and they're now on their second new Octavia, having traded in at ten years old.
Mum kept the Golf for a bit before swopping it for a 2 door Range Rover which had been rebuilt by my Uncle (with all the steelwork galvanised) and running a fuel injected V8 which was eventually replaced with a Mazda SL35 diesel engine. I had my eye on it as a first car, but she sold it back to my Uncle after a few years when the engine expired, and bought a MkIV Astra estate, this was followed by another MkIV, which was replaced with a MkV when my younger sister wrote it off ploughing through a hedge after hitting black ice.
The MkV eventually went in favour of a Kia Cee apostrophe D (that's top gears influence for you) which was traded for another earlier this year.
Stepdad had a Citroen Picasso (automotive purgatory) when mum first met him, this was chopped in for a Qashqai, and he's now on his second one.
The Range Rover was the only one I really wish hadn't gone, but it helped me along with the decision to buy my own one when the opportunity arose age 19.

My old man was British Leyland to the bone. He brought his 3rd and last brand new Austin Maxi in 1978 the year I was born and at the time my mom had a rather tatty 1971 mini clubman which she had inherited from her dad some years before. She had a run of minis before that. My dad would often tell me how he sold a mint mk1 mini when the clubman came and always said he should have kept that and sold the nearly new clubman. I think how quickly the clubman went rotten and the maxi put him off BL motors. After a mk1 cavalier for a few months he brought a 1984 Granarda 2.3L which he kept for about 12 years and was still tidy when he sold it. Petrol prices turned his mind to diesel and he brought one of the last 405 diesel style's from the main dealer which was about 6 months old. He wasn't one to change them very often, I am not sure where I get buying cars all the time from.

He wasn't one to change them very often, I am not sure where I get buying cars all the time from. he was positively reckless compared to my old dear. in 30+ years she had only 2 cars...both mgb roadsters!! after my stepfather passed away (he used to maintain them) and suffering with a bad back she switched to smarts.
