Thought I'd start a build thread for my 1981 gen2 Civic H22 engine conversion project, which has already been going on a year or so now. The original engine bay looked like this: The engine it is being replaced with is from a 1996 4th Generation Prelude H22a2, which looked like this: Bare Prelude engine prior to entering the bay: So far, we have been dealing with the engine mounts Turns out the gearbox engine mount clashed with the chassis rail... Position of mount from inside the wheel arch: Mock-up of bar to hold engine mount: Engine Mount cut and Welded to bar: Rear engine mount and Prelude cylinder on Civic servo (luckily its the same fitting): Provisionally welded in place Prelude clutch pedal fitted adjacent to existing pedals (Civic was an automatic) MG ZR (rover 214) from hub/brake conversion: MG ZR 17" wheels attached for mobility, but quite a nice/tight fit: Extent of Prelude wiring to sort out (we kept everything to ensure we weren't caught out by a sensor or something silly + we are hoping to fit the Prelude instruments to the Civic dash also) As above this is just a snapshot of the work over the last 11 months or so, with lots of stuff going on in between!

Been working on the wiring this weekend, we'd kept every part of the Prelude wiring hardnesses (including 4ws etc) to be sure that there was no risk of the engine not starting because it was missing something... After initially just connecting up plugs that seemed correct (thinking they were all unique and couldn't be misconnected), we found that the dash was lighting up but lights/cd player, heater etc were doing nothing, so a more pragmatic approach was taken using the wiring diagrams, which resulted in the following: The wiring is extremely tight and hard to move at this stage as both the internal and external fuse boxes are in the engine bay, making it very hard to keep everything in place: EWventually got the dash to light up and the car even turns over (there is currently no fuel connected or any of the vacuum tubes/air intake: After being fairly confident that it seemed to work, we started disconnecting wiring deemed unnecessary, which removed a certain amount but still has lots of thick cables in the engine bay, so we started cutting off the tape and covers and chasing wires back to the fuse box. There is still a significant amount of wiring to deal with though and some cables are twisted together, so we're going to start cutting of unnecessary plugs so wires can be quickly chased back and removed, so hopefully we'll soon have something much more managable!

Not an overly interesting update, but still slogging through the wiring when time allows, we've probably removed ~50% at this point whilst continually testing that it has no impact on the dash or turning over of the engine. Ultimately the intention is once (if) the car is up and running, the wiring would be overhauled with new fuse/relay boxes and shortened wiring to suit, however at this stage there are lots more important things to address...

Looks like a whole lot of not much fun right there.
Be a great toy when you've done all the wiring wizardry.

So unkeen to tackle wiring the way you are. I made the front half loom out of a Mini fit a Mk2 escort once to get it going again after a small fire and that was difficult enough. This project is next level. Wish you luck with it.

Just remember not to follow the Bounce method of wiring: - Red to Red
- Green to Green
- Blue to bits

So after removing some further wiring in the freezing cold garage, we finally got bored and decided we had done enough for now, so brought the wiring and dash inside the car so we can start working on getting the engine running with all the various pipes and vacuum tubes that need to be reconnected. A nice panel for us to feed one side of the wiring through This side is just fed through the window for now until we can find a good place to drill a new hole through the firewall Much clearer now... Inside the car not so much...

I am hyperventilating looking at that!
Great work, how you have any idea what any of it is amazes me.

Been along time since I've updated as life has got in the way with working on the car for a number of weekends, but progress has been made and the car now starts: After this great success, we pushed it back into the garage and unfortunately the driveshaft fell out, so it ended up stuck like this for a while... We're now working on getting some driveshafts made to suit the prelude engine and MG ZR hubs, which will also be a different length and spline configuration, which is a fun process Whilst progress on the Civic has been slow, I found a local Moskvich pedal car for sale, which has been through a swift rat look restoration. Before: After: Bit of a shame that the civic isn't pedal powered as this would be a lot simpler to deal with...

How did i miss this....... love it
There is a factory hole just where you need it behind that blanking plate on the bulkhead.
What did the mgzr hub conversion entail?
Great project. Dan
