Up for sale here is my 1988 Mk2 Golf 1.6 Automatic. I brought this recently as I needed a second car for a bit as a local runaround. It’s now served its purpose, and is sitting unused on the driveway (short of the occasional weekend blast and once monthly trip to my local classic car show), so I’ve decided to sell to put some money to sorting some other projects.
First to the good bits. It’s got MOT until April 2019, having passed with no issues. It’s relatively clean given it is thirty years old. Yes there’s the odd scab here and there (the worst being the bottom of the driver’s door), and a few dodgy paint touch ups from previous owner dinks, but overall it’s relatively straight. No major dents, panels hanging off etc. The car is showing seventy thousand miles, and I’d say from the condition it is accurate. The car has never let me down in my ownership, and puts a smile on your face whilst driving. The auto gearbox is pretty smooth, and a joy to use, and once the engine is running for a couple of minutes, the car runs like a modern car. BBS alloy wheels, and smoked indicators give it a bit more style over a completely standard car. Sony CD player included.
Now to the bad bits. I’ve noticed whilst sat on the drive that it seems to have a coolant leak, looks like it’s coming from somewhere around the radiator. Could just be a hose, I’m not sure, but as such I wouldn’t recommend driving it too far without further investigation. If purchasing from far away I’d recommend towing/trailer. The car is a bit sluggish when first started, but this could be down to lack of use. There is no service history with the car, so I can’t vouch for overall condition. I recently enquired and for a full service/fluids/cambelt/tensioner and breathers I was quoted £300, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world to give it a thorough overhaul if you wished. The ignition is a bit tricky, needs a good wiggle to get it working, and the door locks are hit and miss. The boot does not seem to lock. I have purchased a complete lock set including ignition, which will be included with the car (I might even start fitting them if I get time, no promises though).
So there it is, feel free to ask any questions, or come take a look. I’m located in Minster, Kent (ME12 postcode).
Overall a good cheap runaround, which with a bit of TLC would be an ideal starter classic or weekend toy. £750ono. Alternatively it's also up on the dreaded eBay, if you want to bid through there. Cheers
