The Gogomobil made it all the way to Australia as a dealership product via Buckle Motors who sold the entire range across the country. Buckle also produced this little fella, the Morris Mini Cooper Monaco for the Australian market...

The Lotus 12 was a Formula Two and Formula One racing car.

Colin Chapman's first foray into single-seater racing, the 12 appeared in 1957. It featured a number of important innovations Chapman would use on later models. To better use the power of the Coventry Climax engine, it was designed, as usual, for low weight and low drag, relying on a space frame. It placed the driver as low as possible, reducing the height of transmission tunnel by way of a "conceptually brilliant" five-speed sequential shift transaxle located in the back. This transaxle was designed by Richard Ansdale and Harry Mundy. The gearbox had a (long-undiagnosed) oil starvation problem, thus earned the nickname "Queerbox" for its unreliability.

Although the first two examples of Lotus 12 had De Dion rear suspension, it also introduced a new suspension configuration with what came to be called "Chapman struts" in the rear, essentially a MacPherson strut with a fixed length halfshaft with universal joints on the ends utilised as a suspension arm.

Lotus 12 was the first Lotus to be fitted with the iconic wobbly-web wheels. Reflecting Chapman's emphasis on engineering for lightness, these were cast in magnesium alloy, a kind of crimped cylinder, resulting in minimum material and maximum strength, without the weaknesses induced by slots in conventional designs.

Harry Mundy, now there's a name with plenty of interesting connections through his engine design work. I can link him to one particular photograph.



I knew Harry Mundy used to work for Alvis and I was going to go down that route until I started my fact checking.  What I'd forgotten, was that after he left Alvis, Mundy moved on to ERA (English Racing Automobiles) before joining BRM and later, Jaguar. ERA was founded by Peter Cook, Humphrey Berthon and Raymond Mays.  It's Mays that we're interested in here, especially since being from Lincolnshire, perhaps the flattest county in the UK, it's somewhat surprising that he was best known for competing in hill climbs, notably Shelsey Walsh (there's a forum connection for you).  Mays is probably best known for his time at Shelsey Walsh, even though his racing career is a healthy thirty or so years long, where he raced two Bugattis in the early 20s called Cordon Bleu and Cordon Rouge, one of which was red and the other blue, as the name suggests. Now have fun trying to find pictures of Raymond Mays in Cordon Bleu without finding pictures of fancy food. Anyway, that picture above is of Raymond Mays losing a wheel at the Caerphilly Mountain hill climb way back in 1924.  If only I knew who the photographer was of that iconic image, perhaps they'd have some interesting links all of their own.

For the locals around Lake Maggiore on the Italian-Swiss border, the mythology surrounding the Bugatti in the Lake was well known. This particular 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia Roadster used to belong to Golden Age of Grand Prix driver René Dreyfus, who lost it in a drunken poker game to Swiss playboy Adalbert Bodé in Paris in 1934; Bodé soon left for home with his new machine, but with no cash in pocket, he was unable to pay its import duties when he was stopped at the Swiss border. Bodé walked away, leaving Swiss officials to dispose of his prize however they saw fit. In those days, a ten-year-old Bugatti wasn’t of significant value, so officials chose to roll it into the lake; its eventual resting spot was 173 feet below the surface of the water.

An unforeseen, unconnected event led to its eventual exhumation and sale. In 2008, a local boy was killed at a street fair, a victim of a brutal, random beating; the local diving club elected to raise the long-sunken Bugatti and donate the proceeds to a non-profit foundation established in the victim’s name to combat youth violence. A crowd of thousands witnessed the long-sunk Type 22 emerge from Lake Maggiore on July 12, 2009.

(Famously, there was still air in the remaining Englebert tires as it was raised to the surface.) The half of the car that retains its body and tires rested in the silt at the bottom of the lake for decades; the remainder, exposed to the lake, is a solemn reminder of the effects of the elements. Suitably prepped, it sold for around $370,000 at the Bonhams auction at Retromobile in Paris in January 2010; the buyer was Peter Mullin, he of the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California.

Another car with 16 (not water-filled or submerged) cylinders was the Cizeta-Moroder V16T. (taken from Wikipedia) It is now known as just the Cizeta V16T, built from 1991 to 1995, created by automotive engineer Claudio Zampolli in a joint venture with music composer Giorgio Moroder and designed by the famed Marcello Gandini. It was the only product of the Cizeta company. It was developed by a group of ex-Lamborghini employees and initially introduced in 1988.

The engine was constructed from 2x Urraco V8s joined together and mounted transversely (hence the "T" in the name). Apparently the front end is one of the original designs for the Lamborghini Diablo.

My brother once made a scratch built model of it - sadly I don't have any pictures of it.

I was hoping to find a street driven car with even more cylinder like a V20 or so but had no luck. There is an 30 Cylinder engine out there but as far as I can see no one has put that in a car. It was used in a tank.
Anyway so I looked at the biggest capacity.
It might not be the biggest anymore but it must be still up there anyway. The
2003 Cadillac Sixteen Concept – 13.6-litre V16 has a serious big motor and looks great as well and almost Retro material...

In response to the Cadillac above, BMW once made a 400+ BHP 6.7 litre 60-degree V16 engine based on their V12 and shoehorned it into a modified LWB E32 7-series. Why didn't they put this into production???

This thread seems to have fixated on V16's, sorry but there's another important one to add;
Fangio loved it, Moss hated it. The BRM Type 15  was a supercharged V16 developed in the late 1940's that revved to 12,000rpm and developed 600hp.  It wasn't an aero-engined behemoth but it was a giant in its own way as it extracted those 600 horses from just 1½ litres!!  (To put that in perspective, a decade later the sporty BMC B series 1.5 litre TC engine was rated at about 70hp in cars like the Riley 1.5). The pistons in the BRM must have been like Humbrol paint pots!

Ferguson P99 4WD Formula 1.

In a 1997 interview for Motor Sport magazine, Sir Stirling Moss nominated the P99 as his favourite of all the F1 cars he drove.

Harry Ferguson Research Limited was a British company founded by Harry Ferguson who was mostly known as "the father of the modern farm tractor". He was also a pioneer aviator, becoming one of the first to build and fly his own aeroplane in Ireland, and also went on to develop four-wheel drive systems for cars including pioneering their use in Formula One racing cars. The company was based in Siskin Drive, in Coventry, England.

Harry Ferguson was part owner of the famous Massey Ferguson tractor company, but grew intrigued with the research of Tony Rolt and Freddie Dixon.[1] In 1950, they founded Ferguson Research Ltd.[2] Their offers of Ferguson 4WD to carmakers were ignored.Over the next few years, Ferguson sold off his interest in Massey-Ferguson and turned to the construction of a Coventry-Climax powered 4WD Formula One car in 1960.

Despite the death of Ferguson later that year, the Ferguson P99 was raced during the 1961 season in UK F1 races by Rob Walker's team. The car raced only once in the World Championship at the British Grand Prix. However the car won a non-championship race, the 1961 International Gold Cup at Oulton Park with Stirling Moss as the driver. As of today, this is the only victory of a four-wheel drive car in F1 (and incidentally the last race won by Moss in Europe), with the technology banned in 1983.[3] Despite its promising beginnings this front-engined car was soon made obsolete by mid-engined cars.

Ferguson Research went on in racing, supplying the Novi-powered P104 to the STP team for Indianapolis. In 1964 the Ferguson P99, by then fitted with a 2.5 litre Climax engine, was lent to Peter Westbury who used it to win the British Hillclimb Championship that year. Ferguson later supplied 4WD transmissions to various Indy and F1 teams, with the BRM team using the Ferguson 4WD system on the BRM P67 car in 1964.

Five years after Ferguson's death,Jensen Motors took up the idea of a 4WD road car, stretching the Interceptor by 5 in (130 mm) to create the FF (for Ferguson Formula, Ferguson's term for 4WD).It appeared in 1966. Design issues and cost kept it from being a commercial success. By 1969 the company was also contracted to make prototype conversions of several road cars for major manufacturers. These included a Dodge Challenger for Chrysler and Ford Zephyr police vehicles.

In 1969, there was a 4WD boom in F1 with the top teams of the era, Matra, Lotus and McLaren, building 4WD cars using the Ferguson system (Cosworth also built a 4WD car but using their own system). The 1968 seasons had seen many wet races and the constructors were searching for means to increase the grip of the cars. The 1969 British Grand Prix, saw a record number of four 4WD cars using the Ferguson system entered,[4] with John Miles in a Lotus 63 achieving the best finish of 10th. 1969 also saw the introduction of wings in F1 and as there was no wet race that year, all the competitors ceased developing 4WD F1 cars as wings appeared as an easier way to increase grip. Team Lotus made a last attempt with the Ferguson system on the gas turbine powered Lotus 56B in 1971, but the car was uncompetitive. A new company called FF Developments was founded in 1971 by Rolt and continued to develop Ferguson's four-wheel drive systems.

Ferguson was a 4WD pioneer and the system was used in the UK on Jensen production cars, but also in prototypes like several Police cars and at least 1 Rallycross Capri.
But the system was also exported to the States, where it was used on the Novi Indy racer and the American Motor Corp Eagle.

America also had their own 4WD pioneer though.

Utilising the theme of commercial vehicle parts in cars, but also moving away from specials, I give you the Porsche 924. Granted, variants of the engine were also used in the Audi 100, but the lineage is there.

Of course it was developed to within an inch of its life and made for a lovely motor. My favourite was the 170BHP 924 Turbo as shown below in classic red
