Nobody got convicted, because no laws were broken. But the law was changed, because some people objected to an AC doing 180MPH on the M1... The article. And the car.

On 22 December 1965 a temporary maximum speed limit of 70mph (112kmph) was introduced on Britain's motorways. The experiment initially lasted four months but the limit was made permanent in 1967. The national speed limit was set when the most common car was the Ford Anglia

in an attempt to pull a multi combo relation hit, it was jack sears "credited" with pulling the 185mph run on the M1 in a cobra coupe (for some reason urban legend and chinese whispers have mutated that to just a normal AC cobra, expounding their legend) which caused the national speed limit trials, when the anglia was the most common car. Jack sears deserves his own post (entire thread tbh) of his saloon car exploits, but even has a memorial trophy at goodwood revival for period correct 50s saloon cars. (and indeed in historic btcc) also at goodwood revival is the st marys trophy, for late 50s early 60s saloon cars, and heres a picture of dragons den theo paphitis in his 105E if you are wondering what the red car is, its an incredibly rare isuzu bellett GT-R...

The latter of the two there, the 900 Sprint, is a Michelotti design. Looking at it, you can see the large vents at the rear and the way the wheels tuck under, this usually points to something rear engined and I was expecting something homegrown, especially with things like the Mazda Carol being about at the same time. But no, what I didn't know until looking for links is that Hino had a close working relationship with Renault in the 1960s (I begin to wonder who didn't at this point!) and so they made use of the engine from the Renault 4CV. The Contessa that the 900 Sprint is based on is, to look at, radically different but they're mostly the same. The 900 Sprint also benefits from a floor mounted gear change instead of column change, an engine tuned by Officine Nardi, and a carburettor from Weber. Thanks probably to Michelotti's work on the body, it looks quite European and was indeed aimed at the European market. Feels only right to link to the Renault 4CV. Specifically, I'm going to go for a Renault 4CV Jolly, because that's also a very European thing and also just about as silly looking as the 900 Sprint is pretty.

Combining a Jolly type beach car with the earlier Michelotti link. The 1966 DAF Beach Car. Designed by Michelotti.

I changed my mind... Lets go for the Ferrari 365GTC/4 Beach car instead. Also designed by Michelotti...

The article gives us our next link since it's said to use the instruments from a Lancia Flaminia (though not which one) as part of Michelotti's makeover of both the exterior and interior of the car. I'm going to pick this Flaminia from 1966, just because the rear end is so odd looking thanks to those distinctive rear lights.
EDIT: odd, the picture shows in preview fine, but as a broken link when I view the post.

"just because the rear end is so odd looking thanks to those distinctive rear lights" Odd looking rear end, round tail lights....I give you another car I would love to own; The 1961 Citroen Ami

The headlights, complete with chrome trim, of a Citroen Ami were popular with Custom Car builders for a while. Like this Barris built Olds Toronado.

Well I googled that Oldsmobile to see what the rest of it looks like and, the nicest thing I can say is you've shown the best bit in that photo. A much better Barris brothers custom job is this 1940 Mercury Coupe, for Nick Matranga. The original is long gone, but several copies have been made since.

Yep.
Thats why I chose that pic...
The reason the earlier cars are that much better is because Sam Barris had talent and a sense of proportion.
George had a talent for self promotion...

sometimes Barris Kitschy works - especially when the TV itself demands it. Like the Muensters
