I need to have a part I have made heat treated. I'm not sure which process would be best but it's a short 22mm shaft that has a one way clutch running on it. Although I have an engineering background I haven't ever had anything like this done, trying to find somewhere that might be interested in doing a one off at the moment at least is proving a bit tricky.
You can buy case hardening compound to have a go yourself but can see there being some trial and probably a lot of error doing so.
Anyone on here that is involved in this sort of thing that can offer any advice please ?

Hi, Try watching some doubleboost videos on youtube where he explains the process simply. I quickly found these two, fron 6.10 on the first one. -

Thanks. I've hardened things in the past, the main problem is getting something a bit larger hot enough at home and the case being a uniform thickness. I want to get one component doe and then possibly get a small batch done.
I'm thinking of making some kart starters and it's the only part I can't do myself easily.

Send an email to Adrian in Mectec.ie and tell him I sent you. He has an oven for hardening.

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

What material have you used for the part?

The only thing I had big enough was an old Citroen AX stub axle so what spec it is I am not sure. It was quite hard going turning it down though. I'm modding a car starter motor to use as a kart starter so there are nowhere near the sort of loads it would normally have.
I will have to get some decent material if I plan to make some more of them.

I wonder if it's worth contacting one of the few companies that make leaf springs or one of the old school motor engineers, the sort that redo white metal beArings etc. The name gosnays seems to be ringing a bell can remember the advert in the back of practical classics.
Just thinking they might be the people with the appropriate equipment. Might be worth trying to find out exactely what you should have done.
I can remember using case hardener as a apprentice but what for I cannot remember. You might need some other treatment.
