Hour in the garage tonight. Something missing. This heavy, choice set of expletives was wrestled out past the fan and dumped on the bench because it's been leaking. It was met with fire and gentle wrath. I need a better brush. There's a few joints where it's cracked the old solder. Cleaned up where the paint was coming off. I spy with my little eye something that rhymes with work hardened crack. I'll clean that up better when I don't have to be up at 2am for work. Hopefully it'll become watertight again. Phil Sometimes the Like button really is not approval, but rather just a nod in the direction of the latest little challenge. Followed by a bit of head shaking and sucking through teeth. Hope it takes and repairs fully at first pass.

Hope it takes and repairs fully at first pass. I think it should if it's actually leaking from where I saw it bubbling when I heated it. I didn't touch this side of the radiator when I made repairs last time because it was ok- so it stands to reason the pressure changes from being run would find the weakest point. All the fun of old brass. The cracks there look to be the heat differential line from where it was brazed in the past and heated unevenly. Those will solder up. Might be back on the road by the weekend. It was +26°C today, Saturday is set to be -5°C with the possibility of snow. Phil

New LED bulbs arrived. Fitted the under hood one, that's great. Same light output, same color light (not that cold bluish "daylight" that you'd maybe want on a modern high-tech looking car) but 5W instead of 14W. Interior light, standard filament bulb. Plugged the new bulb in. The light elements and circuitry are potted in clear silicone rubbery stuff which is good to keep the moisture out. Bad that you can't grip and twist to put the bulb in and out (bayonet). Finally, with the LED. To look at, you wouldn't judge it to be an LED, particularly with the yellowed plastic. Lights up the inside of the car nicely. The under dash light is now significantly brighter too so an all round bonus. Pulling the parking lights on used to result in a noticable movement towards DIS on the ammeter, now it doesn't move perceptibly. Improvement right there. Got an LED-friendly 2-pin blinker relay coming too (operates correctly with a current draw of 0.02A up to 10A so LED or filament, I'll keep the filament bulbs in the telltales to ensure the current draw is above threshold. Modern technology that still looks reasonably vintage. Phil

Tonight's arsenal- soapy water and an air line. Put soapy water on, apply air pressure. Check for bubbles. Redo places bubbles come from, check again. No more bubbles. Just like checking tires. That'll dry off overnight, I'll paint it and that can go back in the car. Phil

Put it back in, filled it up, put a new radiator cap on that doesn't leak...
And I've got a couple drips from the seam still. Well, poop. I can fix those though. Old cap back on for now so it runs at atmospheric for the time being.

It's still a work in progress, but at least it's to the point I can drive it about now, which is a good reward. Phil

Hi Phil, have a quick question if you don't mind. I am getting ready to tackle a front door handle project in the next few days, any tips on getting the exterior handles off? I plan to pull the door cards off tonight to examine inside the door to see what I need to do to remove them, but if you have any pointers they would be greatly appreciated!

I plan to pull the door cards off tonight to examine inside the door to see what I need to do to remove them, but if you have any pointers they would be greatly appreciated! Door handles are easy. Pull the seal away here, lever the plate so it slides out of the door. Doesn't come all the way out. No need to remove door card for this. Expect it to be difficult- they rust in place. The plate has 2 keyhole shaped holes in, sliding it out aligns the circular part of the plate and the handle falls out. Reassemble by getting the door push pin aligned in the latch, push the handle back in and knock the sliding plate back in. All 4 doors are common. Phil

Perfect, thanks. I will still have to take the door card off to fix my problem I'm afraid. The issue is the exterior door push button/locking mechanism interface. If you have the door locked, and press the door handle push button it will go in fully and return like one would expect. From that point on however, it will no longer open the door if it is unlocked.
I suspect a spring in the mechanism is broken which will have me taking it out. Hopefully just a spring replacement.

Does twisting the key make the door pin pop up and down? Not sure - I don't have a key that operates those locks. I'm guessing the ignition was changed at some point and I was given a key for that and the trunk, neither of which will operate either side door lock.

Aha, yes. The two keys originally were doors+ignition and trunk+glove box. Sounds like the lock mechanism needs oiling. Access to do that is reasonable with the door cards removed. I made keys for my locks, it was a fun exercise. Most hardware stores sell the blanks, Briggs & Stratton B10 (octagon) and B11 (pear-shaped). Phil

Fitted the relay (which is totally electronic and doesn't even click) bit the LED's now blink properly on the turn signal. Excellence.

Hot damn. The weather got real bad.
Temperature dropped from 64 to 36 in about 2 minutes.
(15 to 3 in metricity)
Heavy rain and there's sleet on the way. It was just about nice and warm and dry too. Ugh.
