Alright so I'm looking for front shocks for my Subaru. They used to be available from (amongst others) KYB, but they are low quality and a bit too long for my taste (my car is off course lowered). The shortest stock shocks that fit are from a FWD Subaru XT, but they're no longer available either. Those are on it now, but they're shot. So my options are to convert to insert type shocks, but I haven't been able to find a fitting insert and most companies don't list sizes. The inserts would need to be 38mm diameter and about 300mm long. Or I could adapt a shock from something else to fit on my car, then it would need to be 45mm diameter and same 300mm long. Below is a picture of a KYB, you'll see that the shock slides in the hub and fixes with a pinch bolt. Any brackets and stuff I'll just weld on, spring top hat and or strut mounting point will be the next problem, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Have you tried Rockauto for struts? I just bought 2 for my BRAT. They were 2WD ones aswell as they are slightly shorter and I’m using coil over sleeves. I did have to pack out the top nut though, as there are differences with the original ones. I’m not sure how these compare with the XT struts. BTW, these will probably be surplus to my requirements in a couple months as I’m planning to convert to WRX front struts.

Good luck finding some XT struts, as you've already found out no-one does them anymore, I managed to get hold of a new pair a while ago but I was extremely lucky to do so!
Brat struts are longer than XT ones, from what I remember they are the same shock, but with the spring pan welded at a different height.
With regards to strut inserts, I haven't looked into sizes at all, but mk2 escort inserts might be a good place to start, as there's loads of aftermarket options available.
People also convert Brat's to run later Legacy/Impreza suspension, so that may be worth looking up as then there's again lots of aftermarket stuff around to alter the height etc.

Thanks for your replies gents!
I've had a chat with a local suspension specialist and managed to find a set of coilover inserts which are the correct length and stroke to use in my XT! Of course he only had 1 left and I had to order a set online (which did save me 100euros which was nice).
I will have to fabricate my own strut housing since the cut down stock one has ridges which prevent the insert from sliding in all the way, but that won't be a problem being the strut housings are just fancy 45mm tubes.
The inserts are Koni yellow adjustable cut-a-strut 8610-1449SPORT and are available at FK automotive tuning shop in case anyone wants some as well.
