American vs UK License Plates.

Another random to some, question.

Police and License plates.

My Blazer is a 79 model, meaning it has to wear a white up front and yellow out back, license plate.

I am also a believer that these are safety items, acting as reflective surfaces at times.

However, I like the style of plate in the photos below as it fits the size of recessed hole pressed into the bumper out front and the number plate mount out back.

Once I add in the reverse light bar that Euan sent me, I would like to mount that up high above the plate to protect it and keep the rear reasonably clear.

So, who has actual experience or real knowledge about current opinions from the police and ANPR brigades?

Is this a big transgression or seen as fine as the plate fits the hole and cameras can still read it all??

You’re allowed to run 12x6 plates on an import so it fits the recess. Letters and spacing have to be motorcycle size and style.

As you’ve probaly gathered, you can’t run all digits on one line with correct spacing unless there’s 5 digits or less. 6 works as long as you have an ‘i’ or A ‘1’. For anything else to be correctly spaced it has to be on 2 lines.

Realistically though, I’ve never been hassled and this is pretty much all my cars, although all mine are old enough for B&W plates. From my experiences, ANPR can’t read these anyway.

Imports are allowed the smaller plates, and also is not an MOT fail, unless the spacing isn't correct as a couple of the plates posted above are

Basically, don't have anything obscuring them, and about the right size/spacing/style and there is less cause for the plod to pick up on and give grief

My pajero has an import plate on the rear. It’s the right colour and the right spacing, never had a problem.

I just got it off eBay.

Silly question. Does the US use ANPR technology? Related to that does Germany, or anywhere else that uses different fonts?

If they do, then why can't the technology recognise different fonts? With a lot of vehicles over here from European countries, you'd think that would be the case.

Thinking of the different state background designs for US plates, I often think about how plates in the UK could be more regional in their design, to make plates a bit more "interesting" than just the usual white and yellow backgrounds.

I suppose legal personalisation is limited to number plate surrounds, variances of the Euro/GB marker for example with the Scottish Flag, and for lots of money, buying a personalised reg.
