Does anybody know how many different towing hooks / eyes are out there? Towed a few people today stuck in the snow, eventually one had no hook. I have four different in my car just incase, but no luck. I don't mind getting a couple more, but if there are hundreds.......

When I worked recovery the main ones I kept were Ford(also Jag X-type), Vauxhall, BMW and VW. They're not really meant for towing though; it's very easy to damage both the eye and the car especially when the mount is offset. The screw threads in the car are often in poor condition. Just winching a 3 series onto a truck increases the bumper gap. We did warranty work for BMW, and they insist that the tow eye is backed up with a strop around the suspension. The eye for a Lotus Elise is amusing: it's a stainless M8 bolt with a small loop welded to the head

In the absence of a towing eye I generally attach the strop to the cross-member or just whatever looks strong enough.

Was a VW of some sort. Looked underneath , big plastic undertray, nothing to tie onto. Owner got a small bit of rope around something near tow eye mount. It is a bad road end near the top of a hill so we were trying to be quick!

I know some are reverse-thread, which can be confusing! I once had to tow a VW Golf Mk5 with 2 adults on board up a steep hill with a Fiat Seicento Sporting, which caused some rather alarming buckling of the rather thin gauge rear tow eye mount on the Fiat, though it did just about get us to our destination.

This happened to me when towing a mates mini with my e46 - went round a corner a bit fast and sheared it off!
