Hi guys - had the code read (airbag light on) and it's the sensor on the passenger seat. Been quoted around 300 quid to fix! Car was only 900!
I've seen some cheap bypass things online - are these safe to use? Any suggestions otherwise?
It's a 320d with a bit of an oil leak, are there common leaky bits? Undercarriage is soaked, so findng the culprit isn't a walk in the park - and i have no time to tinker these days!

The seats had a occupancy sensor so that when the cars were new it was cost limiting for insurance. Seat not occupied, airbag would remain undeployed and not require replacement. The mats in the seat degrade over time and send the wrong resistance info to the SRS ECU and that causes the system to shut down due to not knowing if the seat is occupied or not. The bypass unit informs the ECU the seat is occupied and allows the DTC to be reset. Make sure you get one with the seat belt buckle bypass as well, otherwise the dash will constantly inform you the passenger belt isn’t buckled. It’s not quite as simple as shorting the components these days, they send a resistance value rather than a 1 or 0 signal. Oil leak on a BMW is usually the valve cover.

Thanks mate, that's brilliant. Fairly easy install? If i post a link would you mind checking it's suitable?

I've used one of these on a compact I had. I had to use the software to clear the code after I fitted it though. I think all e46s had a recall on the airbags to be replaced not sure if the seat was included on that but worth a check.

Looks right but is ambiguous as to weather it comes with the seat belt bypass too. I'd get one that says it does come with it. Plug it all in and then get the SRS codes reset and you should be golden. The airbag recall is for the passenger airbag unit, not the seat occupancy mat, they will want to replace the mat and charge.

To reset the light a battery disconnection won't do it or even fixing the fault. Only a decent code reader or INPA/Carly/DIS can reset it. An E36 is the same here. I ended up resetting a mate's E46 quite a few times whenever he took his seats out.
It may be worth trying a reset before doing the bypass.
The oil leak will be down to the cam cover gasket. Get an Elring or genuine item if you don't want it to leak again. Also, only torque it down to 10Nm ; that's basically firmish pressure on the head of a 3/8" ratchet, not the handle. That's how little you need. Most I've seen leak have been with a new gasket where someone has gone at them like an orangutan.
