Would it be welcomed if we could have a list made up (and i do understand, that it would probably be a BIG list!) of all parts that are interchangeable between makes and models obviously from and to a certain year, but for example, 4 stud peugeot wheels from 1974 to 1988 fit Fords and also Austin 7's  (i said for example) but, it would be a mammoth task to have someone put everything in order for it to be legible and understandable, so on that note, probably not such a good idea? Just thinking aloud  (plus i have a few minutes free!)

as an idea i like it. after all there are bits that individually we know fit between other makes/models but may not be widely known.

Swoopy mirror Vectra / Astra /Cavalier / some Saab front calipers fit on mk1 Golf's and Caddys, with a 1mm wall sleeve over the mounting bolts.

Mk4 Golf r32 / Audi S3 wishbone bushes (rear) fit into mk2/mk3 wishbones and sharpen them up.

You could set it up as a car parts wiki. I think wiki software if free to use, you could host a simple site whereby when you search for a car it returns the parts that fit that car from other vehicles. Could be simple stuff like the A-series from an MG Midget will fit a Morris Minor - fairly obvious, but good to have in there, to more obscure things like with minor modifications mk1 Fiesta calipers will fit a Mini.

A good many Fiat 124/Lada Riva, and similar Eastern European knock-offs parts are interchangeable. For instance, you can quite easily fit a Fiat 131/Mirafiori twin-cam into a Lada.

BMC/BL/Austin-Rover cars shared a lot of parts across the range - my Morris Minor Traveller has an MG Midget block with an Austin Metro cylinder head, Wolseley 1300 distributor, Austin Maestro 1.3 SU HIF carb with an MG Metro needle. A true 'bitsa' engine, but it runs well!

Toyota Starlet 12" rims fit BMC ADO16. Discovered this when I bought a set cos I wanted the near new tyres off them to put on my Wolseley 1300. Pleasantly surprised when I found that the stud pattern is the same.
Similarly the 13" wheels off my Honda EN Civic fit my wife's Ford BG Laser (presumably would fit a Mazda 323 also) but only on the rear cos they won't fit over the front disc brakes.
A mate of my dad's used to work at a Standard Triumph dealership back in the day and he reckoned that a few customers had Jaguars and they found that some Standard Triumph parts were identical to Jaguar at about a third of the price. Not sure what parts though. Hazy memory says suspension/steering but I could easily be wrong on that.

Great idea. I am always putting things where they do not belong! A list of swapable items would be very helpful and save costly mistakes. The only thing or “rule” I personally would have is that only direct swap parts be listed. If you do the nearly fits or need modified, the list could be very long and on occasion not a safe solution, (slotted holes etc.).

Loads of VW/Audi Group (VAG) stuff is interchangeable across the range of their models, and is also used on a good many Porsches; I recently worked on a Porsche Cayenne, and the front suspension parts were stamped VW/Audi, since they are based on the Touareg platform.

Porsche 924s even used a VW LT van engine and a good many Beetle parts for suspension, etc.!

I was watching an episode of Car S.O.S., where they had a Mazda MX5 temporarily fitted with one Porsche 924 alloy and a BMW E21 steelie, pinched off of other cars visible in the background of their workshop!

Interchangeabilty of parts across different manufacturers is more interesting to me than across models from a single manufacturer - the windscreen washer jets on my Octavia, for example, are the same as the VW Polo (and why shouldn't they be - if it's already in inventory then why re-invent the wheel).

More interesting is that when I was rallying a Talbot Samba and needed a bigger alternator to power all the lights hanging off the front, the one I ended up with was off a Rolls Royce & bolted straight on ...

I was once led to believe that some sort of "junkyard manual" existed in the US of A for this exact purpose.
Never found anything more than rumours about it.

It would be a great idea, but I believe it's near impossible to get this going.

Some sort of Wiki-based software could make it user-based which would divide the task though!

Having been thinking about this, maybe if people just placed an ad in this section, or make a permanent section where they can ask about a part that's difficult to find and what are their options etc....?
as time moves on, and the older models continue to disappear (for whatever reason) it's just an incentive to help keep the things on the road, and maybe even encourage some to come out of hiding?

...and everyone knows a 911 engine bolts straight in to a beetle or camper!

IIRC MG ZR mirrors are on early Elise and VX220?

Back in the days of the QH catalogues, they'd have a lot of this kind of information included. The back would have a cross-reference so you can get the QH number from other manufacturers numbers, and another section lists all the vehicles that the part was fitted to. Probably other catalogues do the same.

I started a web page for Vauxhall HC cars to gather various part numbers and to show cross-references, but it's relatively limited and wouldn't stand much expansion.
