Okay, I've put off the job of replacing my sump pan for as long as I can, but the car is soon due for an oil and filter change.
So I need to get the replacement sump pan on my Essex soon.
I'm interested in knowing what people here use, alongside a gasket obviously, in terms of any sealing gunk.
Some people say "Blue Hylomar" and others say "hi temp silicone sealant". Some say "fit it dry and make it nice and tight".
What's your recipe?

Usually just a thin bead of sealant on one flange to keep the gasket in place Whether that is hylomar or silicone sealant depends what is easiest to hand, or whether there are any bearing caps that mean the flange isn't just a flat piece

You don't need a bead of anything with a cork gasket. I use Victor Reinz sealer (don't use RTV/Hylomar it's curse word, squeeze some out onto your fingers then rub it thinly on the cork gasket. Make sure you use a torque wrench on the bolts, will be about 8-10NM iirc, too tight is as bad as too loose with cork.

I evostick the gasket to the sump, then use hylomar between the gasket and the block, i avoid using silicon on engine builds, it came about when a lump of silicon found its way into my oil pump, locked the pump and totalled a very expensive all Steel dry sumped X flow

And make sure that the new/old/replacement sump flange is flat and has not been distorted by over-tightening in the past. That is probably the biggest cause of leaks - new gaskets and Himalayan flanges with high spots at every bolt hole.

Checked that meticulously when I first bought it and cleaned it up. It's good to go!

Wellseal is what I use on sumps now, could never get my sump gasket on my redtop tight but wellseal seems to be done the job. Apply to all 4 surfaces, wait for it to go sticky then fit. BTW if the sump needs to come off again for any reason it will be a curse word to clean off!
