So I bough this tailgate for my Morris - complete with frenched in number plate recess The original number plate lamp was a mahoosive affair on the rear bumper - that isn't going back on. So I was thinking I could add some "downlighting" in the frenched box. Would 2-3 small LEDs be enough to keep Mr MOT tester, and his mate Mr Plod happy ? Something like 2 or 3 of these ?

It has to be able to illuminate the plate so make of that what you will, and the lights mustn't throw any white light directly to the rear. i'd go with no more than two lights so as not to complicate things. BTW we aren't necessarily mates with Mr Plod.

Do what TVR did and backlight it, not sure how you'd do it though.

I have used THIS for lighting, just use a good double sided external tape. They don't reflect sideways, only down. If you stick a suitable length under the upper frenched in panel, it will do the job as they are reasonably bright. The roll can be sectioned into short lengths (5 leds I think). I have used externally without issues with water.

I found a couple of those bolts with LEDs in within my stash of parts. Tried them out, but instead of bolting them through the number plate, I put them in the box section of the "French" Yep - pretty happy with that, pretty subtle and good illumination. Thanks for the pointers - appreciated.
