We're all speed freaks, we all love modified cars and we all like to go fast. So when did you first travel at the magic ton and what was it in? My first was in my Uncle's purple MGB GT V8 in about 1980. He'd been stuck behind a P6 Rover doing about 55mph and floored it on the A12. That thing was SO amazing with the noise and the power and the speed compared to everything else on the road. I am not a great fan of MGBs but I'd have that one in a shot. Me personally was my mate's L-reg Cavalier 2 lite GLS. Again it was the A12, and I was coming back from Gatwick at 3 in the morning. Think I managed 116. It was only when I picked them up again that he told me one of the rear tyres was held together with Tyreweld and he hadn't fixed it properly... And finally, strictly speaking, there was another time where I was still developing in the womb and my Mum , Dad and brother were coming back from Wales in his Mk1 Escort 1300 GT. The M4 had been finished but wasn't officially open. He moved a couple of cones at a roundabout and proceeded to do 104 miles in 58 minutes as there was NOTHING on the road!! MGB was similar to this: Cavalier was like this but had GLS alloys And of course the 1300 GT was in red, so it obviously went faster...

My first 100 mph was driving my Dads Series 1 V8 Rover P6. It was in 1982 and I was 17. It went from 70 to a 100 VERY quickly, it would not be shabby against todays offerings. It was like this one. I always preferred the Series 1 to the 2.

Driving, the day I passed my test between Junctions 15 & 16 on the M4 with a car full of 'friends' egging me on :-) The car was a Renault R8 so probably not the safest thing to do.
Also had my first experience of aquaplaning and skidding in the first week.

Pretty sure it would have been in the back my mate's Dad's Audi UR Quattro Treser. I remember it well as I had never felt acceleration like it. Virtually identical to this one:

My first time in a car doing (somewhere over) 100 was in a Maxi when dad decided to "see what it could do". He had recently finnished running-in the engine he'd built for it and early one morning on the way to Oxford, he took it off the clock. The clock stopped at 110mph. I don't know how accurate the speedo is at that speed but I can remember it being notably faster than anything I can remember before that. My own attempt was in a completly bog standard and original (even possibly down to the tyres)Maxi 1500. There was terrible wheel wobble between 60-70, but I pushed on. At 90 the steering went incredibly light and vague, but it got to 100. When I slowed down the wheel wobble came back at 70 and was simply terrifying. Wont be doing that again.

I'm not sure my first ride in a car at 100mph - fairly sure it might have been in a family members Volvo 740 estate, Golf CL auto or a Ford Grandada (one of the 70s/80s boxy shape) My own personal experience was driving a 1995 Astra 1.4 Merit (like the one in the picture but mine had 1981 13" Cavalier Alloys which was a step up from the 13" normal narrow steelies) - My first proper car The steering did go light, pretty sure the max it reached was 110mph. I drove the shape after this with the 1.6 16v and it maxed out at near 130mph My current Focus tops at 110mph but it's the way it takes corner which is the ace part.

Can't really remember when I went 100mph the first time as a passenger. I remember my dad maxing out some of the cars he owned on the Autobahn back in the day. Scariest one was a Fiat Uno turbo, that scary little tin can went 125 mph!!
As for my own driving, sometime in my driving lessons. Here in Germany time on the Autobahn is mandatory in the lessons and there was a unlimited stretch and my driving instructor told me to step on it to see how I handled higher speeds. Was in a VW Touran, 12 years ago. Think I got it up to about 110mph.
I've maxed out the Audi A8 I've had a few years which hit the limiter at 250kph, or 155mph.

My name is Fresh&Minty and I'm not a speed freak.
Not sure if I've ever reached 100mph, majority of my vehicle history...
125cc 1957 vespa 125 - not capable 599cc smart & pulse - limited to 85mph 698cc smart roadster - highest I remember was speedo said 108mph but reality was probably less (on a test track also known as the lesser populated M69) 1.4 nissan cube - not capable? 1.? daihatsu cuore - not capable? 3.5 nissan elgrand - more than capable but never really tried 545cc honda acty - not capable 1.? suzuki alto - not capable? 1.2 suzuki ignis - not capable? 1.3 proton gl - not capable?
... have barely been capable, I will say that the max speeds in what I've been in have felt a hell of a lot more than 100mph compared to a "normal" car.

We were 19 and a mate had borrowed his Uncles 3 ltr Granada so we could go to Blackpool for the dirty weekend...
We were doing just over a 100 mph on the M50 and feeling like kings of the road when a Lotus came up behind us flashing his lights to get out of the way !!! Classic put down.

Very first time was when I egged my dad on to do it in one of his Japanese made company cars, late 70's/early 80's. Probably a Mitsubishi Galant or a Datsun Laurel. We were on our way to Weston-Supermare for a holiday.
The first memorable time was 1987, when I was 16, and a print rep took me to see a job on press in his Sierra Cosworth. It must have been one of the first off the production line. I didn't appreciate that at the time. I think we hit about 140mph on the M5.
First time with me driving was, unbelievably in an X reg Austin Metro that my mate's dad had put one of his souped up A-series engines into (he used to own and run a then well known MG tuning garage, but again I simply didn't appreciate that at the time).
And I got stopped and banned from driving for six months back in 1999 when I hit 130mph in a rental VW Golf on a completely empty motorway (empty apart from the motorway patrol car waiting in the wings).

Living in Kent during the slow retro car era when in essence most cars were 40 to 50 pound bangers the only time most people reported going fast was down the long slope on the M2 over the Rochester bridge. Then people would say their whatever car reached 90 mph or something when in reality the old wheeze bags were lucky to hit 70 mph

Mine was in the exact same car albeit a 3 door, book top speed of 99 and it got an indicated 110, so maybe about right? On a flat private runway of course.

First time not driving was in my uncles 3 litre GT Capri in around '76 '77. First time driving was in a Manta B 400 replica, in the early '90s. Got to the magic number before that in my MK2 Essy and Chevette, but probably not actually there. First time over 150 was in my second Benz 500 sec, cos I didn't trust the first one.

First time I remember going 100mph was in a mk2 Cavalier SRi 130. My mum was dropping something off for work on the midlands and I tagged along. Don’t remember the first car I hit 100 I’m personally, I got into motorbikes and had a succession of slow cars, it was probably in my wife’s vectra. I do remember the first time I drove at 150mph* though I drive to south of France with another service engineer to fix a machine in 1995. I would only drive (we needed to take loads of spares so really had to drive) if they hired me a car with aircon... all they could get was a Omega Elite, on the way back we were discussing how fast it would go and decided to find out, I bottled it at 150 and put the cruise control on to style it out we then sat in a rest area for ages before going to the next toll booth.! I got told off by the accounts lady as we averaged 9mpg or thereabouts over the trip *I know it wasn’t 150, but that was what the Speedo said
