I have a 2007 mondeo with 107,000 miles on it (Petrol 2 litre) and the power steering pump started whining yesterday and is now very noisy indeed.
Reading online its varied - some say new rack (still seems to work fine?) some say new reservoir & flush, and some say new rack & reservoir, and some say rack, pump & reservoir.
Anyone familiar with these issues and can point me to the correct info?

Which Mondeo is it? I'll quote what I did on my 2.5T, which is a MkIV. If that's the case, yours will be one of the first MkIVs ever made.
New reservoir and flush and note 3 things:
-NEVER EVER use Dextron based fluids, it will congeal and can damage the rack. To make matters worse, Ford got the spec of the oil wrong on the early MkIVs; My MkIV had the wrong fluid in as well. Only ever use Central Hydraulic Fluid (aka CHF), which adheres to the Pentosin spec of CHF-IIS. -Flush the system out with the new CHF until it runs clear- This can be done with the reservoir removed, fuel relay removed, and a funnel with fresh fluid going into the car. -Buy a new reservoir. Becuase the filter inside the reservoir is blocked, the fluid begins to foam and this is what causes the whining pump. Of course, this makes the flush above an imperative step.
Mine used to whine like mad for a few months. Then it went quiet after the above. Alot of curse word came out when I removed the reservoir.
Early Mondeos are the same (Mk3). The difference here is they use a very special fluid (IIRC it's got a spec of M2C-166H ; it's not that easily obtainable, but it is out there besides the dealer). I've had my steering rack become notchy because a lazy garage didn't use the fluid despite me handing it over to them.

Yes it's an early mk 4. It has the later red fluid in it.
I'll try to get a new reservoir from ford tomorrow, where should I look for the fluid? Thanks for the answer.

Yours sounds like it has Dextron in, and being an early car. That is possible. After all, the literature stated it. CHF is available from any decent parts store. I bought this to do mine. www.commaoil.com/commercial-vehicles/products/view/221When I did mine, I cranked the engine over in order to flush the system while keeping s eye on the fluid level in the funnel.

But I don't want a pump. Sorry, yours only comes with a pump. I'll leave it then. Bye. **checks Ebay** Finds a Ford dealer on ebay & puts in reg no - reservoir £57 delivered Thurs. WTF?? Also ordered the posh oil from Opie oils that you stated which should arrive tomorrow, here's hoping it fixes it. CHF is even available at Halfrauds - bought some as that’s what was supposed to be in my 99 Volvo (when Ford owned them) - it’s got red stuff in there...

Ford dealers do like to play dumb.
That is down to a few things: -the catalogues they use now are dreadful. It really makes parts deciphering tricky when you compare it to what BMW or Mercedes use. -The options on the screen are confusing -The dealers can't be asked. Mazda dealers are worse!
I've had similar experiences but I do now know a decent Ford parts guy which comes in handy. That said, I've still bought dealer parts from eBay as it is more cost effective. Most dealers will do this as it's cheaper to offload surplus stock this way, and it gets them more exposure.
Their stupidy (not the guy I know, but his colleague) cost me buying a driveshaft from them.
You went all out on the oil then! It's not much less from the motor factors to be fair.

Yeah, I bought 2 litres (bit cheaper) so I could give it a good flush and added a gallon of oil for the Pop for free delivery.

Reservoir turned up today - mirror image of my one outlets 180 degrees out. So, took mine off & cleaned it - does not appear to have a filter? It all clear and flows ok. Drained (red) fluid & fitted new (green) fluid. Still noisy It is foaming a little still. Hope Iv'e put correct fluid in it? Not sure what to replace/fix now?

Did you flush the system out as per my directions? I know you are a pretty talented guy, but I probably didn't say exactly how I did it (my sister got married last week, and there were still things to sort out this week; God I do value sleep! I guess I know how people with kids feel now!). This is how I did mine. 1)Remove the fuel pump fuse ; Crank the engine over to ensure the engine will only crank 2)Drain the old reservoir by sucking it out with a syringe until it is empty. 3) Remove said old reservoir 4) Into the inlet pipe on the PAS system on the car add a clean funnel and zip tie it onto the slam panel or use an assistant to keep the funnel level 5) Add a 'return' bottle onto the outlet side. I used an old milk bottle here that I cleaned out. 6) Fill the funnel with fresh CHF fluid. 7) Crank the engine over until the fluid level in the funnel drops. In between cranking the car, check the state of the fluid in the return bottle. Mine had all sorts of rubbish in (black particles), and this is why my filter was blocked in the reservoir. 8) Keep repeating step 7 until the fluid runs clear into the return bottle. 9) Once all done, refit the new reservoir and check to see the fluid isn't foaming. When I did Step 7, I noticed alot of junk came out. My dad tried to flush it by turning the key on and off very quickly when he tried to do the job previously. He only made a massive mess everywhere and still had a noisy pump at the end (it's his old car that I now own). Only when I put a new reservoir on with a clean filter and the system fully flushed did the car become much quieter. Mine was engine rpm linked in terms of the pitch. Your issue is certainly down to air getting in, most likely from debris in some point of the system. It's strange and slightly worrying that your reservoir is totally empty inside (i.e you can see the ports exits on the inside), as that filter serves a good purpose. Do you have a picture of the reservoir. I may see if mine looks the same. I can ask my local dealer if your car is different . You can provide me the reg via PM .

Mine does have a filter, just new one has an extra filter in it? So got confused. I'll try the funnel, bottle flushing. Bit stuck as no new reservoir though. Does it hurt car to drive it? Currently using partners car.
It does run quieter on tick over now, but still howls when you turn wheel.

That's a hard one to call. How long is too long? I drove mine like that for a month or so; mainly as the old man wasn't bothered for that time. Good to how it is quieter. As an interim step without a new reservoir, you could try blow the curse word out the filter with an airline so it comes out of the filtered port side only. I'll see what Ford brings up for your car though .

Well, interesting today. I had read on another Ford forum that wiggling the filter around frees the debris and lets it flow better. So started it up this morning to give it a try - but it was quiet?
Turned steering lock to lock and all nice and as it should be??
Weird? maybe the howling yesterday (it was less than before) was the air in the system from being bled (I did turn it lock to lock many times) and overnight the air bubbles have all risen and dissippated?
I still will flush again and want to fit a new reservoir - but good news that it's gone quiet again - it may only be temporary but it at least proves the pump is ok.

Flushed again and cleaned reservior again - only I broke the filter when I cleaned it - oops! Definitely need a new one now. all seems reasonably quiet now though. My current reservoir for reference.

That looks alot like my 2.5T item. I'll get you a P/N tomorrow . Most dealers have become silly-billies at giving out part nos. That's OK, unless you have a numpty at your dealership.

Many thanks for that, same seller as who sold me the wrong one, lol. PM sent. No rush as I'm not in the UK at the moment.
Little update on car, drove it across town before I left, nice and quiet at first then began to whine after 5 min. After being parked at shops for 10 min it was quiet again but started whining on way home. Hoping this is because of broken filter letting air into system as it was bubbling away without the filter to smooth flow properly.
