Does anyone know anything about old skool Apline head units, or indeed know of someone who does?
I've got a problem with the tape deck on a 7288e that I'm wrestling with and could do with some advice.
The tape plays but I get no sound. I get sound OK from the radio and CD changer however, so I guess it's a tape deck issue rather than an amplifier.

It certainly sounds that way.
Alpine themselves repair these, or at least they used to. I'd give them a call to their HQ in Coventry.
Alternatively, try Gordon Taylor at the Amp Doctor (He is, well, did, maybe, work for Genesis for quite some time ; I don't know if he still does). He will know of somewhere who can repair it, if he can't.

Alpine put me on to a company called Dtronix who do their repairs. They've quoted me £36 inc VAT & return postage to inspect the unit and then a total of £79 + parts + VAT to repair it. The £36 gets absorbed into the total. The repair is obviously subject to the required parts being available still. That's a fair chunk of change considering what these things go for on eBay, so I'll have to consider it. Might help someone else to know about Dtronix though

I was going to suggest TheAmpDoctor too, might be worth contacting him as well to compare prices. edit: added link - www.ampdoctor.co.uk/He repaired one of my DLS amps back in 2010.
