Dave the mechanic mentioned cam chains (might have been belt?) and top mounts as reasons not to...
...thinking about it, did he mention cam chain/belt is on the wrong end of the engine making it a tricky thing?
Part of me wants one anyway

They are one of VW's better engines, being a sharan parts are shared with the alhambra and galaxy so should be easy/cheap to obtain. The only down side is the fuel consumption.Other than that the Sharan in this spec is a cracking motor capable of gobbling miles with ease (oo0 er missus)
ps don't forget the VR6 comes in more than one flavour and not much is interchangable so be careful
Basically, go for it

But claimed 170 factory horses sounds plenty enough. Fuel consumption?? Paaahhhj.... After the Blazer, everything is a nauseating variety of βgreenβ economy. 2-3k mules a year means its not a deal breaker at all.

Would not stop me buying it, but I know the collective knowledge on here massively outweighs my limited to loving the sound of them knowledge

one of the greatest engine sounds out there.
I think the fuel economy is the only downside, the timing chain arrangement is relatively complex but I've not heard of any horror stories, they are indeed between the engine and the flywheel/transmission.

Why should I NOT buy a VR6 engined VW ?? ....coz poor old prozac will get the hump! This is true. Because it isn't old or Amurican enough? True, but itβs about a functional tool, larger, stronger and more versatile with tow hook than the little van thar can. Prozac is brilliant but I need brillianterrrer. π

I have had a 2.9 swapped caddy van and a 3.2. They can suffer with chain stretch but this can be checked in vagcom. Mileage wise Iβve had 36mpg on a good run at fair motorway speeds.
They Respond to turbo conversions very well.

What about a Toyota Granvia with the 3.4 V6 petrol auto, mines been converted into a camper so a tad heavier than normal but it still surprises a few people, a few weeks ago it put up quite a respectable show against a late merc estate down the m61 slip road , happy with that ππ»ππ»
