Morning all I know that an abs light on is an mot fail, but should it be a major or minor? Car is still motd to the end of this month and I’m not sure I’ve got time to fix it properly before then Anyone know? Tia

If your brakes don't work then it's a major fail. If your brakes work but you have an abs light on then it will be a minor fail for having a warning light on.

Looks like it’ll be waiting until current certification runs out then Just wanted to know because iirc a major means they cancel what’s left of the ticket it’s on Btw the brakes DO work, I’m not that stupid 😀 Thanks all

A fail logged on the MOT system means the vehicle is unroadworthy and shouldn’t be driven

We've all seen it/been there. Sadly also now a failure.

I have only had one car with abs It was the worst braking of any car I’ve ever owned I’ve driven thousands of miles in cars without abs, and never had a problem, but then I always look ahead! I can always try the ‘fix’ I heard of a while ago and fit an interior light delay relay to the light😀

I have only had one car with abs It was the worst braking of any car I’ve ever owned I’ve driven thousands of miles in cars without abs, and never had a problem, but then I always look ahead! I can always try the ‘fix’ I heard of a while ago and fit an interior light delay relay to the light😀 Landrover 2/300TDi glowplug relay works well, stand-alone relay that stays on for what appears to be a correct amount of time, use the glow time circuit as the lamp driver can leave an LED glowing, only need an ignition live and earth. Don’t ask me how I know this. ETA: I have NEVER done this to ABS, SRS, or any system that could negatively affect a vehicles safety.I think ABS is also dependant on the car. A BX or Xantia off the top of my head without ABS could be awful to try to stop in a hurry if you didn’t think about the power brakes. Similarly the ABS on my Cherokee, while basic, is great as the all terrains on it just aren’t as grippy as wet road bias tyres and I’ve been thankful at times when it could have caught me out. Now I’m not saying I rely on the system, but there are times when I’m glad I’ve got it on a daily. That said there are also times when you end up with it activating and you do wonder if it was in help or hinderance so I know where you are coming from.

It should be noted that the car should be in a roadworthy condition at all times - if the fault is fixed in theory the remaining ticket is still valid. It logs as failed on the MOT system and a fail is an overwrite of any remaining ticket based on the fact the vehicle isn’t in a roadworthy condition. If a police officer were to ANPR your car as ‘failed’ you’d likely be stopped.

Annoyingly my old Passat incorrectly showed an 'Emissions Failure' warning on the dash when the auto gearbox went into limp mode, even though it was nothing to do with emissions. That = MOT fail/too much hassle, so it got sold as spares...

Annoyingly my old Passat incorrectly showed an 'Emissions Failure' warning on the dash when the auto gearbox went into limp mode, even though it was nothing to do with emissions. That = MOT fail/too much hassle, so it got sold as spares... All the testers I have spoke to say that it MUST be showing a specific MIL, a worded message doesn't fall into the MOT RFR guidelines.

I'll add to that, on diesels before 2008 an engine management light is an advisory, I stuck mine in and it came on on the test (I'd turned it off and it normally does a week before returning), patrols is 2001 apparently.

What Car is it as you have not said?
Have you done any checks on it to find what is at fault?

In case any one is thinking of this abs doesent just do abs it also does brake distribution, so your brakes will be worse than conventional ones which generally have something to limit the pressure to the rear etc.
