When I was 20 I'd already owned this for 2 years. In 2014 things had changed somewhat. But I still own it, although the car is aging better than I am!

Sometimes, others may not understand why you like a car so much. Sometimes, you may not even understand why you like a car so much. But none of that matters; all that matters is that you like the car, and having it makes you happy.

One of these: Not this one, as I have very few 51 year old photos.

I was driving this at the age of 20, it was a 1977 Mini Pickup with a 1275 MG Metro engine. It went very well although compared to the mini 850 and mini 1000 that preceded that wasn't difficult and it would all be relative. I had also just built this: And was in the process of building this which I still own, completed a few days before I was 21, I had to wait until I was 21 to get insurance on it as no one would cover me at 20. You can see the state of my long suffering parents back garden at the time. In the picture from left to right:

1965 MG Midget (spares car)

This was mine when I was 20, in 87. A 78 trans am, that was cheaper to insure than a xr3i.

A lot of you had some really cool cars at 20! At 20 years old I had fairly recently written off a mk3 Fiesta 1.1 and had then swiftly moved up in the world... I can't quite be sure of the timeline now but certainly at or around 20, I was either in this: I was absolutely in love with it for a good while and assumed it was in full, perfect working order. Now I have a bit more knowledge and experience under my belt I can tell you it had an extremely tired 3.5 V8 which was on its last legs and had a weird hotch potch of various EFI bits cobbled together to make it run. Or this: Again, totally loved it, a 200Tdi Discovery with 'MUD MAKES ME HORNY' written in big red letters on the back door. Wouldn't be seen dead in the thing nowadays but still have very fond memories of it.

Superb thread, loving all of these old pictures. Unfortunately I wasn't driving when I was 20 because I did this when I was 19! However, when I turned 21, I gifted this to myself

If it wasn't my freshly restored MG Midget with 1380 Minisport engine and painted in its original Bronze yellow I would have been kicking around in a Mk1 Fiesta as the Midget would be in the garage for winter. Miss that wee car. Cheers Col.

It was almost exactly the same as this one I found online My next door neighbour had a Ghia one very similar in colour, in addition to a T-reg Mk2 Granada in a very dark (midnight?) blue. He neglected the poor old Cortina, rarely washing it and the camshaft went so clattery and the engine so smoky it was incredible - it ran like a bag of nails. Yet, it would always start, even with an almost flat battery on a cold winter day!
