. I know these Rovers/MGs get a bad press, but the one I’ve had experience has been sound. I think its a case of the K-series rep for headgaskets evolves into "avoid anything with a k-series, they are pap" which is unfair, its abit like the early maxis with a cable change gearbox, when the cables went slack they just needed adjusting, the gearbox was still a good gearbox, but when they changed to a rod change gearbox (ive driven many, nothing wrong with them) they still couldn't shake the rep for having a bad gearbox, which in turn meant that they had a rep for being a bad car. I worked at a rover garage when the 25/ZR were new, and they were both great cars, we had a 25 diesel pool car and it was without doubt the best one id driven, thinking about it now there was something odd about that car, it didn't drive like other 25's. It went round corners like it was on rails and was a really 'solid' drive. I do wonder if it was 'standard'.

The 25s were quite new when I was in the trade and they were an underrated car. Nice to drive, revvy engine, good gearchange and they were pretty robust, I remember that they didn't usually need anything for an MOT in general.

bmcnut I think it’s possibly a case of Chinese whispers, as it is with many things. I recently read a thread on this very forum that was a number of years old about using the K series engine in a RWD application and it descended once again into anarchy, but provided some useful information. I have also had a ZR and ZS. They were the 160 or 180 VVC models and they gave me nothing but troubles with the alarm systems. My brother in law also had a brand new ZR and I remember the dashboard fell onto our laps within a few weeks of ownership. That said, I return to my earlier point of our one being a sound work horse and running forever with no troubles. To the original poster, what’s the plans with yours? What’s the story with these diesel lump, good reliable motor?

Mother in law has a 25 auto she has had from new, gold leather with air con and just over 20000 on the clock, future classic? Definitely.
As for the Streetwise, it’s about time they got some recognition

Is the zr suspension lower? Some of the Streetwise had cool individual rear seats instead of a normal rear bench. They also had sligjtly raised suspension over the standard 25 so ZR suspension, which is lower than standard 25, will lower it.

I watched a German Motoring programme, very similar to Top Gear, in period and they tested a Rover Streetwise against the Polo Dune. They marked the Rover as being ahead of the Polo.

Lowering them is dead easy, they have 1" aluminium spacers on the strut tops to raise the rideheight over a standard 200

I did enjoy a mate's P reg 200 Bubble shape. It was more competent than it had any right to be! Hard to thing that
-they are now getting on for 25 years old -Rover kept that design well into the 00s! Rover/BL/AR did love continuing a design for eternity however.
I never took to the Streetwise, but a drop does suit them very well!

Did they still come with a seemingly pointless wobbly key at this age?
I'm keen on MG/Rovers of this era, I passed my driving test in 2003 in a brand new MG ZR 1.4 - my driving instructor had just gone independent after being with the AA since I started with him and so I did the bulk of my learning in a Ford Focus and then the last few lessons and both driving tests (all the best drivers pass second time you know) in his trophy blue MG ZR, great car that was.
Not too many years after passing my test I had a diesel MG ZT saloon which was also an excellent vehicle, ran that with no problems other than the fuel lift pump and then moved it on to start my long running love affair with horrible broken Land Rovers.
Best by far though was the MG ZS V6 I bought unseen off ebay on a whim for £700 in about 2009/2010 when they really were going for nothing (to be fair they're still cheap now when they do come up for sale). It was a 2003 car, think on that for a second, a 7 year old car at the time, less than 60k miles, full service history, everything worked and it was almost completely like new mint - £700?! I ran that until I bought my first house. I'd have another MG ZS.
Anyway, the streetwise, well bought sir!

So it's not on the road yet, this week hopefully, just cleaning/repainting the bumpers on. I'm trying to source added extras in the shape of the headlight and rear light protector bars
